Default Zoiks? Oil Out of Exhaust Tip (Photo)

Hey guys,

Today, I backed my M3 out of the garage to do some spring cleaning dusty sweeping), and when I walked back in, I noticed some wet oil flecks on the pavement in a place that would have been directly behind and about 6 inches away from the driver's side pair of exhaust pipes.

Photos below, but the only relevant info I can think to share is that when the weather is good, every Saturday I have an 80 mile round trip run into town which is probably similar to a track excursion for some people. The weather was clear yesterday (gorgeous, in fact), and so it was a .... good one. That said, I always make sure the last 5 miles before home are light and easy for cooling down. Otherwise:

> Oil looks and smells good on dip stick.
> The car doesn't seem to use a drop of oil in normal driving, but in intense driving, I usually have to add half a quart throughout a 5,000 mile oil change cycle - usually around 3,800 the amber light will come on upon shut down, especially after a "..spirited.." run.

Let me know your thoughts.... normal? Bad ring somewhere? Something else?

NOTE: I laid down a heavily refined CZ75 Protek ACCU "Orange" for size reference (one of two like it in the world, and the finest pistol I've ever fired).

Very doogan type thread.

I see that you looked and smelled it. Taste the oil to make sure and report back.

Okay, thank you very much. (And, good point, Bob. But it was wet?)

Have a nice Sunday, my friends.

My car does that, it’s water and carbon. My car doesn’t burn a drip of oil.

Good point, Hassan.

Dream: Haha. If you like Doogan threads, you would enjoy a project I have in incubation. For areas where RADAR detection and laser-jamming are illegal and too risky (and to fill an important counter-measure gap even when they are legal), I am having a team of programmers use a piece of recorded dashcam video to test build software that will visually analyze vehicles in front of (and potentially behind, if the user wishes to double up on equipment) the car for 'important visual signatures':

From a data base of stored photos from 360 degrees around known-threat vehicles, provide an audible warning for:

> Vehicles whose profile and/or head/tail lights resemble a commonly used law enforcement vehicle.
> Vehicles with obtrusions or reflective signatures indicative of a law enforcement vehicle.

This system would run off an android phone (which should be kept permanently in the vehicle) and would receive real-time video from a camera of the user's choice -- the better the cam and the road-steadier the mounting method, the better the warning. I believe at this point an electronically stabilized 18x optical camcorder like the SONY PXW-Z90 will be the best. But technically, many dashcams are already close to the point where this could really be useful.

During the day, it will provide instant visual warnings for as far out as miles. At night, the camera's ISO can be cranked down so that oncoming headlights are able to be analyzed for hundreds of yards.

....IF it all works.

It is quite fun, in any case. Waze is awesome, but some of us live in areas where too few people use it. And for those in busy areas.... there must always be one who is first.....
