The springs that get replaced are based which gear/s are having transistion problems. There are 3 springs in total. 1 each for the shift group (1-2) (3-4) (5-6)

Thinking all of them should be done, regardless of the problem area. I mean, you are already under there, and it is already torn down... Why not. Even if it costs 3 times the price of the parts. Imagine the labor charges to do this 2 more times... It is really a no brainer.

Oh yeah, I agree 100%. Thats the plan, Im just curious, so if/when i get the chance to get under there I'll have a look and change out the springs.

I will order all three springs first.

I had a problem with 3rd and 5th. Previous posters have mentioned replacing all three springs since it is a PITA to get to them. realoem.com shows 5 springs and one of them appears to be only available as a kit (#17). For those that have done this, which springs did you replace specifically by part number (23311228393, 23111222720, 23317511337, and 23311228405)? Thanks in advance!

I just finished doing this repair. I've never been so happy to find a broken spring in my life. It took about 10 hours to complete. But to be fair, 4+ of those hours was just to get the exhaust off. I had to cut off 6 bolts that had rusted beyond repair. Do yourself a favor and go buy a E12 (external TORX) socket for the 4 bolts at the header/exhaust pipe junction. I got mine for $5 at Advanced Auto. We'll worth it to avoid lots of aggravation trying to use a 3/8" 12-point wrench.

Thanks to everyone the discovered and documented this fix. So glad that it was such a cheap solution.

How do you make sure the rolling pin is in correctly.. how do you keep it vertical?

I don't know. When I did mine, I used a magnet attached to a small flat blade screwdriver to pull out the spring. I didn't pull out the pin. I did destroy a c-clamp by removing the screw so that I could pry the blind plug back into place.
