Don't worry about it. Just connect the 22 gauge and 18 gauge wires directly to the knob wires usuing the blue connectors I have mentioned in the items needed. Also cut the 22 & 18 gauge wires long enough to give yourself some room.

I beleive the cars that display 0; instead of N, when neutral is engaged. The D/S lights go off when you shift down to lower gear. Again I am not sure since I don't have the older SMG in my car. But I do know that you will get Night Illumination, R, N, and D/S when it works.

Talking Just when I thought I'm done...

Though not heavily modified compared to many of you out there, I thought I'm pretty much done modding my ride...until now...dude, I'm usually the type that hates buying things that aren't really made for my ride...but you've just shown me an exception.

This is cool, very nice job and detailed DIY!! Now I want the M5 knob...

I just wanted to clarify that at step No. 14, once the knob wires are connected to the 12 way connector. The 12 way connector has to be connected to its original location before turning the key to position No. 2 and running the gear test to see if the lights are working. I had assumed that everyone will know to do this, but just wanted to clear it up.

14. Once the wires are in its correct location. Turn the ignition to position No. 2, apply parking brakes, and cycle through R, N. and D/S. Knob should light up as gears are selected. If the test is successful move on to next step; otherwise check your connection.

Very good, and I apologize for not having dug up the possibility of seeing if there is a M5/6 part that would avoid the direct hook up to the hall sensors. Hope I still get to it, though anybody is welcome to beat me to the punch, as I am a bit tied up at the moment and my M3 tech has gone skiing.

This is an incredible post! Awesome job.

I just ordered up the M5 SMG shifter from my dealer the other day. I guess I am third in line in the US that wants one! Now I can't freakin wait to get it in and install it.
