Yes, if you just want night illumination, just wire 4 and 5 to the smg selector switch.
Yes, the wires in the knob are only for illumination purposes.

Just finished installing mine. What a difference over the chrome OE knob! It looks and feels so much better! I scuffed up the chrome gator ring with a scotch brite pad to give it the brushed aluminum look, turned out nice. I wired up the illumination, Reverse and Neutral. Drive/Shift lights were too bright at night.

Here is the wiring info if anyone needs it.

SMG M5 Shift Knob
1 = Zone Reverse (GND)
2 = Zone Neutral (GND)
3 = Zone Drive A/S (GND)
4 = Night Illumination (GND)
5 = Switched +12v for Night Illumination
6 = Switched/Constant +12v for zone lighting

SMG2 Control Module
1-(Reverse GND) to 3 (White w/Green stripe)
2-(Neutral GND) to 7 (Yellow w/Blue stripe)
3-(Drive A/S GND) to 8 (Green w/White stripe)
4-(Night Illumination GND) to Brown w/Black stripe (SMG Switch)
5-(Switched +12v) to Grey w/Red stripe (SMG Switch)
6-(Switched/Constant +12v) to 1 of the Red/White wires.

Nice touch with the brushed ring.

Looks good...

Does it only works on e60 M5 knob or with all other DCT knobs?

I just did mine and I'm very happy with it.
I have the older instrument cluster that displays "0" instead of "N" and thought that the drive lights go out if you down shift with the knob.
I'd like to clarify that the lights only go out for a split second.
I thought that the lights would go off until the knob was put into a different position.
I love it.

I do agree that the +/- is too bright at night but it is perfect in the day time.
Using a pot only will kill the daytime feel.

The best way to go in my opinion is to add a relay combined with a pot (resister if you know the resistance that you want)

The affect that I'm talking about is the same as the led on the speaker button in the center console or the LEDs on the heated seats. When you turn the lights on, the LEDs dim.

We can do the same thing by getting the nighttime illumination wire to trigger the relay, which will change the path to the pot so every time the lights are turned on, R, N, and +/- will dim to whatever settings you like.

I found this to be the best way to regulate the amount of light given off by the shifter:

Pick up a 50K-Ohm Linear-Taper Potentiometer (https://www.radioshack.com/products/...ant=5717291717) and splice the wire that you tapped into the 12v connection (Pin 6) and connect the two ends to the potentiometer (either by using crimp on connectors or solder). The adjusting stem is pretty long but it fits. Adjust it to your liking, electrical tape it up and forget about it!

This is much like what user Reach wrote (http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showt...=83712&page=20) but with a Radio Shack part number that's more specific - furthermore I found that 100Ω did not not give enough adjustability.
