Default Clutch Masters FX600

Update on page 3

I am in need of a new clutch, I have done many n/a mods and want to keep the car that way for now.

I have been looking at the FX600 kit, as an assembly w/aluminum flywheel it weighs 23lbs, w/steel flywheel it weighs 25lbs. I can get a very good deal new.
Their flywheels are zero balanced and all other parts are balanced, but not as a full assembly.

The flywheels are 11lbs and 13lbs.
The setup is a twin disk setup.

I am looking at this kit for its weight benefits more that the clutch grip. I feel the centrally located mass will aid in my autocross 1st and 2nd gear driving.

I know that the car is heavy and there are no real benefits other then what i just listed.

I know that the noise will be there at idle in neutral and clutch engaged, and some chatter in 1st. Also off the line times(drag) will be slower.

My questions are:
1. Would the steel flywheel be a better choice due to the(possible reduction in) gear rattle and small increase in weight?
2. What other choices of setups would you recommend?

That is a rather aggressive clutch right??? Why not just he stage 2 kevlar clutch with a JB racing flywheel???

The jb flywheels are great, noisy but great. Was hoping a steel unit would not be so bad.

I am interested in a twin disk for the lack of rotating mass. The fx600 is a organic compound for the street, this kit is meant for the street. The fx700 is the race kit.

I believe the stock assembly is 35lbs, I am not looking for the lightest, just a good performing street setup that wont be a hassle. This kit is good for 30k miles as a dd from what i read.

It is rated for 600hp, so it may be overkill now, but w/a SC or a 125shot it wont.

I would be buying this from their master distributor so it is a bargain.

damn only 30k miles...i would be pissed if i had to replace a clutch that often...LOL....how much of a bargain are you talking about? Normally this clutch is about $1400 give or take a few bucks...

My stock lasted 30k, it slips now when i stab the throttle on the highway for 15-20miles then it holds.
I can bang/smoke 2nd and 3rd all day with no slip, just wont hold the midrange torque.

Retail is $1700, can easily be found for $1250 shipped(lowest advertised is $1280). Knock off $150 and thats where i am.

I don't have any experience with the fx600 in an e46 M3, but I do in an E36 M3.

For a pure race car application it is an excellent set up. Depending upon your tolerance level it it may be acceptable for a dual purpose car.

the issue for me was the cluth was like an on off switch, would get very old very quickly in any sort of traffic.

In my e46 m3 I have the jb racing flywheel and bimmerworld clutch and absolutly love it. Due to the BMW transmission design they will make noise once a light flywheel is used, any ligthweight flywheel.

Yes, for ultimate performace the fx600 will be a little faster, but at the expense of day to day civility.

^^^Yes, thanks, i read about the on/off engagement, "they just make a little shutter of the engine among load when engaged... So you have to double clutch for it to be a smooth transition on engagement."


Option 1 - "The Ease Off":
** Knowing exactly where the narrow engagement point is, hold revs at about 1200rpm, and attempt to slowly engage the clutch. The clutch will chatter the entire drive-train about 2-3 times and then lock up, sending you on your way.

Option 2 - "The Brisk Take Off"
** Holding revs at/above 2000rpm, release the clutch relatively quickly achieving a 'mini-launch'. While rather sporty, this is the only way to not chatter the clutch and shake the drive-train.

Option 3 - "The Launch"
At or above 4000rpm - quickly release the clutch
It will not slip and you get the idea of what happens next.

The fx600 is the best street twin setup from all reviews, they have been made in 7.25", 7.5", 7.75", and 8.5". Not sure what is currently available but the smaller is what i am looking for and the larger is easier to drive.

If the only benefit to the billet steel flywheel is its abuse threshold than the aluminum may be my better choice.

Most of my driving is done out of town and on back roads.

I think you slipped and roasted they stocker.

My stock clutch still had more than half its life left at 98,000 miles, including 4000 track miles, autox, drag racing, clutch initiated drifting, and dickish daily driving

Yes, the stock has been burnt twice. Once by a parking garage and once by me. Each time it took a few days to rid the smell.

When i bought the car the clutch seemed glazed and had no snapping power for clutch drops(14k miles), after autocrossing 5 or so times it grabbed all the time w/wider tires(295/19). I did some n/a mods all at once, now it slips when stabbing the throttle, but still spins 3rd on the limiter when clutching it.

Why would the clutch begin to grab after 15 miles or so of getting on it? Is it just at that point?

I do drive very hard, both autocross and street driving. I have had the car for 16k miles and not surprised that the clutch is now slipping. Thats my thought on a high performance clutch with performance benefits, mainly for my autocrossing.

It is not a dd but i do tend to when the weather is nice. And i understand why they came with a soft clutch, they are heavy cars and things break.
Only thing is i am not looking forwards to the looks and questions such as, whats wrong with your car, and whats that noise?
