Default Re: Vanos bolt replacement history

Year: 2003
Build Date: 01/2003

Intake bolts damaged: 0
Intake bolts sheared: 0
Exhaust bolts damaged: 0
Exhaust bolts sheared: 0

Work peformed by self/BMW/Indy: Self
Time spent on replacement (if by self): ~12 hours (paranoia made me triple check everything)

Cost of replacement: ~$170 ($20 new bolts, $25 timing tool rental, ~$120 VANOS and valve cover gasket kits)

Symptoms (if any) prior to work: While the motor is cold, I have an intermittent and faint marble in a can sound between 1800 and 3000 revs. Now that the bolts are done, I suspect my VANOS unit is slowly ending it's life.

Big thanks to the DIY (I read every post), and to the 5 very informative videos on youtube without which I could never have done this job right.

Cost of replacement: $12 bolts, $60 gaskets/grommets/etc

Symptoms (if any) prior to work: None, Inspection 2. Although the bolts werent really damaged the side of the thread facing the allen head were extremely shiny and sharp (as if the threads were slightly ground down from vibration or over torque).
