terra - sorry for the novice question, but how do you determine version CI34 through CI37? I sincerely doubt my current unit is anything special (original to the car), but with my PO, who knows... I've also got a spare Euro LCM in the garage that I bought for the rear fog light button.

I just didn't know if it's something indicated on the outside / inside of the physical unit or something identified through software. Assume based on this thread, it is visual on the physical unit though.

Look at the SW number printed on the label

3.56 = CI34
3.6 = CI35
4.0 = CI36
4.5 = CI37

3.56 appears to be a no-go. Board is identical, but microcontroller is different -- it has a much larger EEPROM and Flash built in. Makes it impossible to use the 4.0/4.5 software

3.6 LCMs are much more common though, and they can all be upgraded

Excellent work as always Terra!
Can the sw number be found via inpa?
Any rough idea which build date started with CI35?

Oops .... just read OP again. CI35 in Sept 2003 (MY2004)... seems I'm likely out of luck on this one

CI35 appears to have started in September 2003. It was used until September 2005

Its pretty easy to identify, just look at the partsnumber and if its "6 936 xxx" its flashable

Yes. But if you can run INPA, you can probably also just run NCS Expert and read the module. You'll know for sure what coding index you've got then

Needs BDM as far as I know. If it can be updated by OBD, BMW didn't tell us how
