Default Who's done Valet tunes and what did you do?

So with the car going into body shop for some light work I thought maybe I'd finally throw together a valet-tune to flash onto it while its there...

Clearly loads of ways it gets done... Simple throttle-request limits, or RPM limits mostly... Paffy uses the very-elegant method of torque limiting...

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showt...post1067197233

...which is neat however I'm thinking even beyond torque, limiting roadspeed and RPM is still desirable.

At the moment my 'working draft' is:
  • Locked into Comfort mode
  • Super relaxed Comfort throttle request profile, also capped at 75% throttle
  • Max RPM in gears capped around 5600-6000 depending on gear
  • Speed in gear capped at 65mph

Anybody else have any other suggestions?

I did think it might be 'fun' ( mean?) to lower some thresholds so that the car throws codes and goes into limp mode if anybody tries to thrash it. Maybe set the knock thresholds way down? If you pick the right spot that should 'drive ok' if babied but then pull timing and throw a code if WOT'd for more than a few seconds..?

I haven’t messed with it too much, but easiest might be to set one of the throttle safety modes as the default.

Yeah that's basically a limp-mode mechanism, right? Separate from the alpha MAF-failover tables? Any idea how to 'force' that? Looks like "SK" parameters are related to it but nothing jumps out at me for a min/max threshold that would be easy to force out of bounds.l

Well I haven't messed with it too much, but I think you can do a bit using the curves KL_MD_SK_MAX, KL_MD_SK_GRAD, KL_MD_SK_AX, and KL_V_MAX_SK

In those maps, the x-axis is the "stage" of the safety program, and I believe "stage 0" is normal operation. So you can limit the maximum torque with KL_MD_SK_MAX, maximum acceleration with KL_MD_SK_AX, and maximum speed with KL_V_MAX_SK. KL_MD_SK_GRAD is probably not as relevant in this case (it's the rate at which torque is reduced in the event the safety program kicks in while the engine is already delivering torque).

OK yeah I looked at one or two of those and saw the stages thing...

So yeah you could just set stage 0 to what you want. I'd rather change some parameter to knock it into stage 1 or 2 or 3 really easilyl ideally, but I guess we woudl need more understanding of how the functions work and if there were appropriate parameters for that...

Well if you're willing to do a program modification, it might be feasible to change things such that it sets stage 1/2/3 depending on which key is being used (which might be nice for the valet key).

ha ha my assembler skillz are pure hacker patch level, not nearly good enough to figure that one out. cool idea though.

Key 1 = performance tune
Key 2 = wife (OEM with smoother throttle profile) tune
Key 3 = valet bozo tune

FYI, been test driving the car with those parameters, and its totally fine.

I was a little concerned about capping throttle-request, but then having slightly 'dangerous' lack of power for pulling into traffic... but honestly capping at 75% and 5500rpm makes it even feel like a slightly quick 330i.

Ideally probably I will go down even a little more on driver request and RPM, possibly 70% and 5k, maybe still fiddle the Comfort curve a little.

I'll post my "Valet Mode" that I do through throttle input in comfort mode.
Basically comfort mode is Valet Mode.

Simple and works in the real life.

I had good feedback on this configuration, just enough to be safe in traffic and merging.
Of course there is still no speed limiter doing it this method. But 0-100 at a turtle's pace may deter some valet guys haha!
