Default ▀▄ eas | Macht Schnell Ashtray Gauge Panels - Sneak Peek (and Gauge Poll)

Some of you may have already seen this on display at Bimmerfest 09.

These are rapid-prototype pre-production photos of upcoming ashtray gauge panels for e9x 3-series/M3 BMW. Gauge panels will allow three 52mm gauges and replace your factory ashtray using the factory mounting locations, with finished production units made from injection molded ABS plastic and an estimated arrival date of July 09.

Gauge Selection:

I'm interested to what opinions are out there for your top 3 gauge choices in your M3 (boosted or normally aspirated) given the following choices:

Boost
Vacuum
Boost/Vacuum (combo)
Intake Pressure
Water Temp
Exhaust Gas Temp (EGT)
Oil temp
Oil Pressure
Fuel Pressure
Voltmeter

Feel free to write in your own selection and reasoning if needed.

Let's discuss.

Looks good Tom, I may go that route after the VFE charger goes in. Very nice!

For Naturally Aspirated M3's I suggest the following:

*Water Temp gauge (The BMW OE sensor does not monitor this in a realistic way)

*Oil pressure gauge (It's a travesty for an ultra-high rpm motor not to have this gauge)

*Voltage gauge (With all the electronic gizmos in our cars, it's always good to know the status of your electrical system)

For Forced Induction M3's I suggest the following:

*Boost Gauge (To monitor the performance of your blower)

*Water Temperature gauge (This gauge is even more important now that your engine is producing more heat than a normal NA engine under load)

Note: Any overheating issues will show up much quicker through your water temps...than you oil temps. (fact)

*EGT gauge (will alert you if your modified FI timing (tuning) is off, there's not enough fuel, too much fuel, etc.)

Will the guages be supplied with all the fixtures and fittings needed to make them work? A set of instructions would be cool as well so the regular DIYer's can fit them.

This depends on what gauges are selected. Nearly all gauges come with mounting hardware and fittings.

If you call the 8000 plus rpms "ultra high rpm motor," then what do you call the R6 revving to over 16000 rpms and the R1 revving to 13750 rpms?

8000 rpms is ultra-high for a street car.

Street bikes need to rev that high, or they wouldn't make any power from such a small displacement 4-stroke engine.
