Exclamation New DIY Guide: Enabling the outer LED ring on OEM tail lights

I just did the LED tail light retrofit to my '03 Coupe. Prior to installing them, I did some research on this forum and I'm glad I did.

I learned that the outer ring of LEDs do NOT light up intensely when the brakes are applied because '03 and prior M3s do not have the adaptive braking. But when I found previous posts from hotcello and peterlai stating that you can get the outer LEDs to light up by rewiring the adapters, I got pretty stoked.

So this past weekend I decided to document the entire re-wire process since I was going through it and it was never really documented. Check it out. Full-color digital pics and all.

BMW OEM OUTER LED TAIL LIGHT RE-WIRE GUIDE

Thanks!

So let me get this straight.
If my car came new with LEDs, then I have adaptive brake lights?

What exactly is the criteria for the car activating the outer ring on its own? ABS activation???

Someone actaully sell an adaptor that makes it so you dont have to reflash and it does adaptive breaking even if its not part of your system. I considered getting it but at 170 I figured Ill just get the reflash and live without the adaptive breaking.

Really nice write up! I wish all electronic instructions came with as good as pics and locations as you made.

I still dont think I would do adaptive breaking though because its supposed to mean your breaking hard or actually when the ABS kicks in (which I just learned).

ok, i'm confused now...i have an '02 and did the retrofit...

so if I do this DIY, then the outer ring of lights will light up even with slight pressure and not when ABS kicks in...

OR

am i to assume that the outer ring of lights do not work at all for me at the moment, and if I do this DIY it would allow the Adaptive Brake lights to work (only upon ABS activation).

...I would not want the outer ring of lights to light up everytime i hit the brakes if it wasn't meant to be...

Can anyone clarify?

thanks :nixweiss:

i think it looks better when the outer rings lights up all together when you brake normally
without the outer ring, the spherical LED effect looks less full
