Default Service history

Does anyone have the ability to run a dealer service history on a VIN? I'm looking at a '98 vert and the current owner doesn't have any maintenance history.

Thanks,
Ryan

Get a pre purchase inspection done and call it a day. I doubt there are many E36 M3s out there still serviced by the dealer. Most probably get serviced at indy shops or by the owners.

I would definitely get a PPI done as well. The car has 54,000 miles and is extremely clean. I inspected and drove it yesterday, and wouldn't be surprised if it never saw rain, or the prior owners cleaned the engine bay with a toothbrush. The current owner told me he has owned it about 18 months, and the owner before him owned it for a long time. The current owner is the 3rd one.

Hey!

PPI forsure. Make sure and ask for them to look specifically at the cooling system and suspension.

Look for rust in between the door sills and on rear bumper/trunk lid (water build-up and drainage).

Got any pics for us? Good luck with your search!

EDIT: If you don't already know this, you can run the VIN on bmwvin.com and check to see if all of the original options listed on there match what you see on the car. Won't really provide you with service-related input, but it could bring up questions if a lot of the main options were changed.

From my looking into this question, which may or may not be true information, BMWNA is wary to release service-record information -- even if you prove ownership AND can pinpoint WHICH dealer the car was serviced at in the past.

Carfax and Autocheck sometimes have service info in a vehicle history that is of dubious usefulness to you, the present owner.

Those replies about getting a good PPI and/or checking more in-depth for maintenance items after you buy the car are spot on. What good is it to know that the car had an inspection 2 in 2004 with xxxxx miles when it probably needs a lot of those inspection 2 bullets performed again due to age? If big stuff like brakes, clutch, powertrain and suspension components need to be replaced now, what good is it to know they were also done in the past?

The only thing available to you from BMW is the Vehicle History Report (VHR). This is only for warranty work and does not include work a customer pays out of pocket for.

VHRs are easy to get and do not include any previous customer information. If your dealer won't give it to you, try another, make friends with employees or just ask nicely. Act like you deserve this information and you'll get what you deserve... a big fat no.

If it were me, I check that the top works well. If it has a clean car fax and or autocheck, buy the thing. With only 53K miles, and some anal owners, how bad could it be?

Ok, maybe a compression/leakdown test. but dame, that car is still practically new...lol

I am planning on getting a PPI done and then buying it. I ran the carfax last night and it came back with no accidents and the ownership history agreed with what the seller told me. I'm still going to try and get the service history just because it would be nice to have. I understand it will probably need some items and maintenance.

Getting a PPI at a dealer tomorrow morning. If it checks out I'll purchase it Thursday evening.
