Default 2003 325xi Touring Wagon M3 Swap

In January of this year I picked up a 2003 325xi Wagon. The idea was to purchase it as an S54 RWD swap candidate and that time as arrived! With the help of Ryivnx (Ivan), we have already begun the process of buying everything needed to make this happen. Full disclosure; I will be offering the car for sale once the swap is completed and all necessary CA BAR legalization steps have happened. The end result is to have an M3 wagon, in a stock body, M3 drivetrain front to rear, 6MT and everything refreshed (where applicable) along the way.

The wagon is a unique combo (IMO), Topaz on Natural Brown and currently has 162k miles. It's a well maintained CA car, fairly clean but PAINFULLY slow in stock form. The donor is a 2004 M3 6MT with 86k miles, salvage title... the perfect car to recycle.

For the last 6 months of ownership I've been picking away at all the usual E46 things we all go through. New OE clears front to rear, fresh headlight lenses, M Sport door sills, wood trim delete, thorough detailing, and a number of M54 repairs that are no longer relevant. It came to me with a stack of maintenance receipts so it didn't require much to drive. There is so much more to come though

Ivan and I started to discuss this swap on July 2nd and by July 3rd, he already went and bought our donor. This cosmetically challenged (repaired janky af) 2004 M3 was perfect. All CA car with a healthy motor, transmission and rear end... albeit dirty.

A few days he was at my house, ready for a 2 day tear down. A time lapse of that is below.

Here's a run down on the current list of parts that are on the way

This is just the start, but you'll see a lot more detailing to come. Currently waiting on several thousand in new parts too

CPV was leaking and the rear main seal.

Befores (after is pending)

Some custom an fitting power steering line was on there, made a mess. All of that is getting replaced.

Lots to refresh with the engine, but you'll see it start to look more like 98 M3 S54 soon (OE E46 bolt color scheme for this build, as factory built).

Starting to clean up the mess we made tearing the M3 down and cleaning every part as I organize.

ZNS3 bolts clean up easily and any of the yellow zinc bolts I replace with the exact match recoated from my stockpile.

here we go - we gonna attempt to salvage one turd and make another turd go a bit quicker, haha.

We have quite an extensive parts list

Excited to put it all back together, Brett!

Sheez how many cans of brakleen are you going through?!

Iím mid-swap on a mystic over tan. Very jealous of how clean your CA cars are.. wasted quite a few hours cleaning up the subframe rust on my ME m3 donor.

This is going to come out beautifully. How are you dealing with the transmission cross member?

I have a blast cabinet with 300grit glass and a 30L ultrasonic cleaner filled with Simple Green. On the transmission and any parts with cosmoline, I use gasoline to clean them.

Cross member I will probably cut the 325 part to extend the M3 part. I don't know yet tbh. I had forgot about that being an issue until Dave B asked me about it today.
