Default FIXED: engine stall during low speed turning (also VANOS issue)

Hi all. First post.

I just wanted to share how I ended up fixing my "engine stalling at low speed turning" issue that a lot of people seem to have. My engine would stall at low speeds such as when driving into a parking space. The revs would also dip if I let off the clutch. Never got a SES from this, and it had been going on for a couple months or so.

The problem ended up being the solder joints in the VANOS solenoid coil pack. I only found this out when I got a couple of SES lights for misfires and exhaust cam being too far advanced (exhaust cam was stuck). The car was idling rough and would stall at lights (had to keep RPMs up to prevent stalling). Car had all Besian parts except the coil pack, so I opened it up with a dremmel tool exactly like this post: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=564316. 3 or 4 solder joints looked bad. The bad joints create an open circuit which prevented the solenoids from functioning (explains the stuck exhaust cam). I resoldered all of the joints and closed the case up with some black RTV silicone, making sure there were no holes or cracks for water to get through.

It worked. VANOS worked, SES went away, and I noticed that the car no longer stalled during low speed maneuvers. This makes sense qualitatively. As far as I know, the solenoid uses a magnetic field to actuate the metal rods that somehow control the VANOS timing (probably by allowing more or less oil, I really don't know). Since the strength of the magnetic field is proportional to current, and the solenoid is probably only a couple of Ohms resistance, a bad solder joint creating only a couple of Ohms resistance could significantly reduce your current aka magnetic field aka ability to change VANOS timing. With adaptation, it might be ok in some situations, but situations requiring higher current might not get to the desired timing.

Anyways, after 4 months, I still don't have the issue. If you've tried other things and still have this problem, I would suggest testing your VANOS solenoid pack by replacing it with a known good pack as this may also be a warning sign that the pack will fail later on.
