Having a DD M3 in addition to this car have given me huge amounts of patience for projects, happily.

You bought another m3?

Lol. It’s been really cold and I bought another car that I haven’t really posted about, so not much has occurred on the M3...

Nothing overly exciting to most people-- a 2003 e39 530i.

I didn't plan to buy it, it kind of fell into my lap for a price I couldn't refuse... with all new bushings all around, new cooling system, Koni yellows, headers, snow tires, and a very nice condition interior that's never had an air freshener or been smoked in.

It was stupidly cheap because of a blown automatic trans. I'm swapping an e46 330i 6mt into it (which is more involved that you might suspect, as it will require a hybrid driveshaft to make it fit properly). I'm going that route for two reasons:
1) manual e39s are rare in junk yards, e46s are pretty common.
2) The e46's 6mt combined with the e39 automatic rear diff is a remarkable good combo-- gives you the same combined ratio in top gear as the e39's 5mt with the 5mt diff, but gears 1-5 are all a bit more aggressive. 80mph cruise will be ~3000 rpm-- just like the stock e39 530i manual, e46 m3, e39 M5, etc.

So far I've disassembled it and am collecting parts for the reassembly. Haven't pulled a trans from the junk yard yet, because every weekend has been miserable.

Going to get the following parts new/rebuilt:
driveshaft/CSB/guibo
clutch/pressure plate
rear main seal
selector rod seal
input shaft seal
output shaft seal
trans mounts

I don't really know what the purpose of this car is going to be yet. Maybe... DD when the M5/M3T are down for work. I do really like 6 cylinder e39s-- 500+ lbs lighter than the M5, R&P steering (V8 e39s have reticulating ball), and a full size spare. This car is in nice enough condition that I could see it becoming an s54 recipient, if the M3 were to end up with a different engine, which I've always thought would be a great car-- an S54 e39 would only be ~100 lbs heavier than a stock M3 coupe, slightly stiffer chassis, a ton more civility and practicality.

sounds like a nice car, I've always loved E39s. Would love to see an S54 E39, has such a swap been completed yet?
