I also have a 06 smg, 125k miles with no problems tbh. No gear dropping or anything. It is a fickle little beast.

I had an issue like you describe except it never fired back to life, my battery was just shot. It took a booster pack in the trunk and a jump at the front terminals to get me home before I got a new battery. It would click once and die. Check the date on your battery.

Buddy please stop bloviating about a subject you know nothing about. It isn't personal but it gets really old when practically every smg problem post has someone vomiting irrelevant crap about how he swapped to a mt6 or how SMG is clearly inferior or flawed.

This garbage has gone on so long that resale values for SMG equipped cars are discounted despite being a very expensive upgrade to the basic 6 speed. Even the OP assumes smg must be at fault without even having a cog light.

There are only about 3 unique parts that can fail(gps, actuator, hyd motor) all have specific fault codes to identify them and an easy relocation that cures ALL the hot weather related problems.

I never once said anything detrimental toward smg’s so I’d appreciate it if you didn’t throw out false accusations. I simply said I am glad I own a manual and people get defensive.

And I can garauntee you that my comment had little to no impact on the stigma that is affiliated with sequential manual gearboxes. So again, quit taking it so personal.

OP, once again, I hope you got some good advice and you find out what’s wrong with your car.

For those that are in topic and interested in helping...I can answer some questions. Firstly, I am well aware of the pros and cons of SMG, I did my research. I’ve been driving e30 m3s (race and street) for 18 years, I’ve had many other manual cars along the way too. The car is experiencing electrical faults IMHO, just trying to find a similar scenario from anyone else.

- My battery is from 2/18
- it does sound like a click from the starter although it’s only one click and very faint. It’s not like the noise a starter will make with a dying battery when it clicks repeatedly
- I have put about 100 Miles on this car so my reference point for what it usually does is nonexistent
- I pushed the car about half a block into my trailer. Decided to try it before we strapped the car down and it started no problem
- when I turn the key to start the car there is usually a 1-2 second delay from when the key is in the start position until it starts cranking

Thanks

In my experience multiple clicks is low power and single click is starter hanging. Seems like when your starter gets up to engine temp it can't start, but may work fine after it cools off a bit.

You're more than likely correct. I just figured I'll toss in another suggestion just to give OP suggestions.

P.S. no need to fight RedM3 and M3pilot...let cooler heads prevail. We should be fighting for an ETA on this supersprint section 2. Lol, just a lil joke. I hope you both laughed.

The first thing I would check is hood switch. Your car won't start, if it thinks the hood is open, and sometimes the hood switches go bad. I had a car which sometimes wouldn't start until I open and close the hood, press that hood switch once or twice. If nothing else, it doesn't cost much to replace/check.

Second, I would check SMG relay, and if hood switch is not a problem, change the relay. Your problem seems more electrical/loose connection rather than a SMG related.

Texaz could be on to something, when I first got the SMG car I was freaking out cuz it wouldn't start (when I was working on something with the hood open)

I would go with the starter replacement next.

Also the 1 or so second delay seems to be okay with the smg cars. I sit in the car, key to 2nd position, knob to N (foot must be on brake). Then turn ignition. There is usually a little delay as it's making sure you're really in neutral.

I did check the hood switch and toggled it a few times -- my indy mechanic (BMW Specialist) seemed to think you can just unplug that and it would still start but I don't know enough about it to say for sure.

Also -- the car wouldn't crank, it only clicked once and faintly. It's possible the starter is the problem, I'd probably have to drive it around more and try to replicate the issue.

The important thing to note is I put the car in neutral, pushed it onto my trailer, and only then did it start again. I of course tried to start it right before I pushed it and got nothing. So, we moved the car in neutral and then it fired up...

I'm hoping to order some SS gear if they have a similar sale end of this year, but guess I'll have to set my internal expectation about getting it within A HALF A YEAR, LOL!
