Thanks for letting us know the outcome. Always nice to know you have a mechanic that starts the with basics!

Ironically I had the same problem in my '04 Volvo V70R, only it would still start but wouldn't activate cruise control because it thought the brakes were applied all the time.

I'm pretty happy about this easy fix!

hi

I just to share my experience with m3 an its smg, it was happen last year and was in a group of bimmer in a long journey which in a sudden my car engine just shutdown. I push the car with my colleague to side of the road and check everything include the fuel pump. The culprit for the no start was when I disconnect the MAF, the engine start again and didn't realise that a faulty MAF can shutdown the engine which is something new. A colleague who was behind me before my car stops saw there were a puff of white smoke from the exhaust just before it shutdown.

Those brake light switches are adjustable, SMG or that other kind. Tweak the switch a little, so you don't have to stand on the pedal to let your car know that you're ready to roll. I had your problem, and that was my fix. Good luck.

X2...I had the same problem and adjusted the switch. All good after that.

It's been a few weeks but I thought I would follow up on this for the archives --

The brake switch at the pedal did not cure my no start problem. I replaced the starter next and the problem has gone away. It has started everytime since the starter was replaced.

I put in a remanufactured Bosch from FCP for $129. Easy fix. Also, I'm not sure what all the talk is about the starter being such a ***** of a job to do, I did it all from the top and got it done in about 3 hours. Not bad considering it was my first time working on this car. Way more stuff to pull out of the engine bay than in my e30

One click does indeed sound like a starter contact. They are copper and get worn. Thanks again for reporting back.
