Default Re: E36 Euro S50 Swap

I've done the swap into a later chassis.

You need the wiring harness from a LEFT HAND drive euro-spec m3, or you need one from a right hand drive car and have to open up the junction box that sits above the engine and have to swap it all around. There's JUST enough wire length to make it to the DME box. BARELY.

Then you need to use the correct DME. The S50B32 euro engine uses the MSS50 DME. You'll have to get one. And then you will need to get the EWS deleted from it if you are using it in a 1992 chassis, because the chassis doesn't have an EWS module that you can sync to it.

The last thing you have to POSSIBLY do is swap around some of the wires in the X20 connector. The X20 is the large round connector that sits next to the fuse box.

IF you have a 1992 325i you'll have an X20 already. So that's good. But I don't think all the pins are the same. You'll have to figure out which pins are which on your chassis side.

Then, you can twist the little lock on the wiring harness X20 and pop the pins out and relocate them to match you chassis side.

I can link you to some threads that list the pinouts for the euro harness. And I have the ETM for the S50b32 that I can send you.

But if you want me to figure out EXACTLY which wires need to go where and whatnot... I'm not gonna do that for you. Sorry.

for the records, there is no M3 specific ETM, but a general E36 ETM for model year X that includes the M3.

Right. I should have stated that.

But I have the ETM for the european models, which is what you need for the S50B32. It was a pain to track down at the time, but this was in like 2009. Maybe it's easier to get these days.

It's not really a fun thing to navigate, but I THINK the euro one is at least searchable. The us-spec one that I have is just a scanned copy so you can't search for "X20" in it....

True. The EU ETM's are all searchable.

Maybe try to OCR the US ones?

It's a moot point now. But yeah- that might have been a good idea.
