If this is infact Mercury in the mirror call OSHA. Mercury is VERY dangerous stuff and once the goverment gets wind of BMW not resolving the issue there will be hell to pay.

Not sure if its mercury or not. But, I emailed the person that was mentioned in post #3 and they replied right away. You need to fill out some paperwork and they will replace the mirror. It did say "As a pro bono goodwill gesture" though. So I dont know how many times they will do this.

Shaking my head in amazement.. one person says "mercury" and I'm willing to bet - within a week it will be a "known fact" "saw it on the Internet.."

http://www.gentex.com/auto_how_nvs_work.html

Gentex uses its proprietary, solution-phase electrochromic technology. We sandwich an electrochromic gel between two pieces of glass, each of which has been treated with a transparent, electrically conductive coating, and one with a reflector.

There is no mercury in the auto-dimming mirrors.

Ok, I got in my car today and the effing mirror had exploded. The little sensor at the bottom of the mirror was missing and my entire center console looked like someone poured acid on it. The dam thing squirted out and even got on my leather seat.

What the hell would happen if I was driving and the plastic sensor popped out and hit my eye and the liquid burned my dam cornea. If they dont replace my center console and the mirror for free, I see a product liability lawsuite here.

I don't know about mercury, but the liquid in the old design M/D mirrors (the ones that came OEM in our cars) was at a minimum caustic (it caused a nice stain in my leather shift boot when it leaked in my M5) and there have been reports that people have suffered breathing difficulties from inhaling the vapors. I sealed my old one in a plastic bag before inserting it back in the carton to return it.

The new (replacement) design M/D mirrors use a different fluid. I would bet that they are replacing the older ones as requested to try and head off a class action or other law suit. Whatever the reason, I applaud M/D for stepping up and replacing the mirrors as needed.

As for the rain sensor, I think there is a spot on the form to specify whether you have one or not. The actual sensor is a separate part that mounts on the windshield, but the mirror I think has plug to accommodate it or there may be a different mount when you have a rain sensor, so you need to pay attention to answering on the form correctly.

They do send you an entire new oval mirror unit, not just the glass.
