Just my perspective but I think it is mostly aesthetics drive up coupe values:

1) Taillights - I have strong preference for coupe taillight shape
2) Carbon Roof
3) Lines of the body
4) Coupes originally sold for a higher starting price

Wow. Yeah. Good answers.
The carbon roof is a huge bonus. I will never buy a salvage title and here are my preferences, highest to lowest:

1 - Must not be black (too hot in California)
2 - Must be 6spd (i love that I can skip gears and only a ~1/3 of the cars are manual)
3 - Would LOVE a carbon roof
3.5 I can't decide between coupe or sedan yet
4 - Would like cloth inlays in the seats
5 - Would like Alpine White because it stays cool
6 - Would like a ZCP version
7 - Would like no nav

The sedan isnt that bad! Its only 22lb hvyr than the coupe. It just comes down to if you need the extra doors & leg room?
I personally went for the e90M3 for that reason

Same reason i'm looking primarly at 4 doors myself. I like the extra room and accessability. I'm waiting for the prices to drop when the F80 M3/4 comes out.

Default Re: E92 M3 Depreciation Analysis

This is a price update on the E90M (sedan) and E92M (coupe) prices on Clist from 5 years ago as seen in an earlier post. I only analyze 6spd manuals. DCTs with Salvage titles are now sub-$20k but I don't include those because values are so wildly unpredictable. I've never been interested in verts because they are so heavy.

E90Ms (sedan) are worth $20-29k with ~100k miles, give or take 30k miles.
in 2014... E90Ms are all at $30k. 2008-2010 with 70k, give or take.

E92Ms (coupe) are worth $25-36k with ~70k miles, give or take 20k miles.
in 2014... E92Ms are at $35k - $50k or higher.

As you would expect, prices have come down across the board about 22% in 5 years.
E90M Sedans are cheaper and less valuable by about 16% in 5 years.
E92M Coupes still pull a premium but their values have dropped about 28% in 5 years.
Since Coupes have dropped more, they are now closer in value to Sedans than they were 5 years ago.

Sedans will be worth more in the long run.

I've been eyeing the market and this is a good general estimate. but the enthusiast spec'd cars are still going for a pretty penny. '13 ZCP 6spd with carbon top in MR,IR or IB with 50k or less are fetching 45-50 grand consistently. 40 grand would be considered a deal for one of those. IMO thats still a lot of dough for one of these cars and they're holding their value very well. the next generation can be had for that kinda money but it seems like those that want the V8 aren't even thinking about cross shopping.
