other than an e90 the only thing i've been also considering is the new s4...but the m3 seems like a more fun drive, at least a bit more fun. also, no used s4's around yet.

Unless you absolutely have to have a BMW, I'd throw the E63 and S6 into the mix...

i've heard not so good things about the s6 although in theory it sounds like fun...quite a bit more expensive as well for the equivalent condition unless i'm mistaken. e63 might be interesting, but do i get anything that i don't have in my m5 other than an automatic? with the e90 m3 in theory i get a car a bit more tossable plus dct, while keeping a back seat and trunk. anyway, thanks for the suggestions. while i'm on that track i also might look at a new m56s infiniti...not quite the sports sedan as the m3/m5, but the new one looks like it has potential.

but likely i'll stick with a german car, it's sort of ingrained in me...

The GT500 does have some great tech toys and SVT has made a good name for themselves over the years but these cars are not for everyone..
But if we just remove the Ford badge and Elmer's glue the BMW propeller in place, it should be good to go.

also, the gt500 just won't have the build quality or general 'feel' of the m3, or am i mistaken? anyway, no trunk and less room in the back so it won't work.

You can look at quality rankings for Ford and BMW now...

An '08 S6 can be had for the same money as an '08 E90, I'm not sure the V10 scares me anymore than the S65 when it comes to possible issues, but who knows...The only thing that you will gain with an E63 is about 100 more HP

so i test drove a couple of e90 sedans and looked over an e92 coupe this past weekend. my verdict--this looks like a really fun replacement for my m5...a bit more taught in just about every way, and i really liked the exhaust sound relative to my car. i think the size is just about right for our lesser space needs...enough for three or four people (in a pinch in the e92) plus a couple of sets of golf clubs (seems that you will need to fold down a seat to get golf clubs in there, but that is ok). the hard part is going to be finding what i want--either an e90 with all packages or an e92 with all packages and a moonroof--only dct. one of the cars we saw was a lemans blue e90 with tan/wood interior. this was the nicest interior combo i've seen but i'm not sure about the external color. my wife really doesn't like it, thinks it is too 'flashy'. the other car we took a hard look at was a silverstone e92 loaded except for premium audio (really stupid ommission imo on an otherwise loaded car). this was gorgeous inside and out (grey seats). the only problem is that it was at my local dealer and they are being totally ridiculous on price..we are easily $5k apart and although they have had the car for 3 months already, they seem perfectly content to sit on it. i told the sales guy that they should put a bunch of wax on it since it is going to be there on the lot through the winter! i really don't like dealers...

anyway, the good news is we are pretty set on an m3, and would consider a coupe or sedan, but the hard part is going to be finding what i want in terms of color and equipment....and at a market price, not an inflated price. i guess my e39 m5 will have to soldier on for a while until we find the right one, but since this is a 'want to have' not a 'have to have' i am going to wait until we find the right combo...

Should have told them to give you a call when they're right about to put it back to a dealer auction.

we know the sales person (my wife and he are on our local chamber of commerce together) so he knows we are serious and he knows how to get in touch with us any time he wants to....

What's the price, mileage, condition, and options? Maybe you're at the other extreme .
