Default 1998 M3 Sedan

I purchased this car in October, 2010, with 116,330 miles on it. It was stock save for BAV Auto coil packs, braided stainless brake lines, B&B Triflo exhaust, Alpine CD player, Polk Audio amps and component speakers. At some point the starter and alternator were replaced as well as the AC blower motor. The headliner was replaced and the car was resprayed due to some clear coat failure. All original VIN tags are present.

The seller mentioned he had all maintenance and upgrades performed at a reputable Euro shop. I contacted them to get the history of the car after purchase and learned that the head gasket was done at 105,000 miles. They replaced the cam, camshaft bearing bridge, head bolts, valve cover gasket, MAF boot, PCV valve, thermostat and housing, front calipers and braided lines at this time. The seller did not disclose this to me, which is pretty odd since he put 10,000 trouble free miles on the car since the work was performed.

Here’s what I’ve addressed in the past 9 years:

117,000: Lemforder guibo and rear ball joints, Powerflex RTABs, brake fluid flush

121,000: Hood cowl/weather strip, brake switch, Mahle cabin filter and air filter

122,000: I was forced off the road in a roundabout and put the car over the curb. This caused the driver door bag to deploy. The passenger front wheel, knuckle and wheel bearing were replaced as well as the driver door panel.

125,000: Pre-cat o2 sensors, Lemforder sway endlinks

130,000: Cooling System Overhaul: full coolant flush, Stewart water pump, Behr S54 3 row radiator, t-stat, BMW t-stat housing, Behr expansion tank and cap, Lemforder upper and lower rad hoses, Continental belts, BMW AC and alternator idler pullies, BMW deflection pulley, DEPO glass projectors, rear window weatherstrip, Motion Motorsport underpanel

135,000: Clutch Overhaul: OEM Sachs Clutch Disc, Pressure Plate, and TO Bearing, OEM LUK Flywheel, Bear Motorsport SSK and refresh kit, Detent Pins and Shift Bushings, e46 M3 Trans Mounts, Trans Seals, Redline D4 ATF, Center Support Bearing and Mount, Pilot Bearing, Slave Cylinder, Rogue SS Clutch Line and Pivot Pin, CDV delete, Behr Fan Clutch, Spark Plugs, door handle gaskets

138,000: Suspension Overhaul: H&R OE Sports, Koni Sport front inserts, TC Kline rear top adjustable Koni Sports, TC Kline RSMs, Lemforder front Control Arms, Powerflex FCABs, Lemforder Tie Rods, BMW Front Sway Bar Bushings; Alignment, Camshaft Position Sensor, PCV Valve & Breather Hoses

140,000: Mahle Fuel filter and cabin filter

142,000: VANOS Solenoid, Mahle air filter, Timken/Koyo Front Wheel Bearings, BMW Rear Wheel Bearings; Hood Struts, BMW Clutch Pedal and AKG delrin pedal bushings

153,000: Dr. VANOS unit, Valve Cover Gasket and Grommets, Duralast Gold 92 battery

155,000: 17x8.5 Style 24’s with Hankook Ventus V12 Evo 245/40/17s approx. 50% tread

158,000: Coolant Flush; BMW Expansion Tank (Behr developed a pinhole leak), Coolant Level Sensor, T-stat housing seals; finally installed a Cross Brace, Mahle air filter

167,000: Redline D4 ATF; Redline 75w110 Diff fluid; BMW DOT4 Brake fluid flush; Gumiplfedged door seals; tire rotation

• Shell Rotella T6 5w40 and Mahle oil filters every 7,500 miles, filter replaced again between oil changes
• Spark plugs replaced every 10-12k with NKG BK6RE
• Check Engine light is on for Secondary Air Pump – I check codes periodically with the Peake tool which will be included in the sale
• Low coolant level is displayed on OBC due to a faulty level sensor; I planned to replace at the next coolant flush
• OBC display is abysmal
• Windshield has a rock chip in it and is missing the top weather strip (on the sedan, this is a cosmetic piece and requires the windshield be removed in order to install). I removed it very early on to replace it with a new unit as the PO had a Sirius antenna routed under it which caused a slight bulge in the rubber. I am sure I have it somewhere and will include in the sale
• Glove box sags and the door is starting to separate
• The panel below the steering wheel does not fit perfectly against the dash in the upper left corner. There must be a tab or something that is missing.
• Passenger front seat recline gear is shot. I have the gear and will include with sale, it never bothered anyone enough for me to do the job
• Rear driver door lock actuator works more than not; an OEM actuator will be included in the sale
• The car sits on square, polished Style 24’s; the Hankook Evo’s have 5-10k left in them. I would personally have them diamond cut when tires are replaced due to fine scratches in lips; a set of staggered Contours can also be included
• The factory CD changer was removed, but will be included

This car spent the first 19 years of its life in the south. It was my daily driver until May, 2016. It was accumulating way too many miles for my taste commuting, so I bought a second vehicle. In 2017, we moved back to CT, but it is garage kept and has not even seen rain since May, 2016.

If I were to keep the car, I would have the bumpers resprayed along with the nose panel and I’d have the remainder wet sanded and polished. The respray is not to my liking, but I am very particular. There are a couple minor dings that can be PDR’d, there’s a very thin strip about 1/8” thick and 2” long where the clear chipped in between the windshield and sunroof. There are rock chips/sandblasting in the front bumper, nose panel and hood.

This car is a solid, reliable driver. I would not be concerned to drive it cross country tomorrow. I hoped to take it to Lime Rock a few times a year since we moved back to CT, but life gets in the way. I’ve sadly never even autocrossed the car. I will get detailed pics up within the next week. I’m posting now to motivate me to actually sell the car.

Current mileage: 167,8xx. Located in the Hartford area of CT.
