The big pipe lol. You mean the intake elbow? Not sure how that'd lead to black smoke.

If the intake elbow wasn't actually seated behind the MAF, that would throw off MAF readings in a pretty massive way

Thanks for sharing, OP - hope it helps someone who thinks they've checked everything

IT WOULD?!?!?!

I drove without a MAF for a bit. Drove fine, certainly no black smoke. Car is still getting air whether it's metered or not.

Hm? If you unplugged your MAF, you put the car into Alpha-N.

Try leaving the MAF plugged in, but remove it from the housing sometime - I guarantee it won't be fine/ the DME won't be happy

Yes black smoke. The maf is registering X amount of air so the car knows how to fuel for that amount. Vacuum leak as I stated would result in unregistered air entering the system resulting in low o2 reading. Since the car runs on a closed loop this would alter the fuel trim trying to correct the o2 reading within the ecu limits which results in rich running. If beyond the limit it would probably light up the eml.

Hope that answers your question.

"Big elbow", intake elbow to the plenum. Sorry for that mistake, I was in a hurry when giving feedback.

Leon
