Default 6MT to SMG, anybody did it?

Hi,

there are many guides about converting an SMG car to manual.

Did anybody choose the opposite way?

Reason is, or could be, that I race a manual car with loads of upgrade/mods, lightweight... carbon roof... and I'd like to SMG it because I don't want to buy a SMG car and restart the whole job.

I driven a SMG and it's ok to me on the road and better on track. I don't care about real or fake SMG issues as I'd choose new or refurbished top quality parts.

My car is a manual 2001 with Evolve Airbox, alpha-N, no DSC, 4.11. Engine is brand new from BMW Dealer.

Thank you.

You should use the search function and read the thread that was posted not a month ago asking the same exact question.

Will it be sprint racing/time attack or longer duration w2w?

Something to think about. While I'm sure a lot of race teams would like to keep the SMG, most will swap it out if they are racing the car. Heat can make the SMG sometimes unreliable. And you would hate to lose a race because of that.

Alex from Gintani in California swapped a DCT Transmission in his E60 M5. Which originally came with an SMG transmission. I'm not sure if its possible to match it up with an S54 but it could be. Maybe give him a call?

Has there ever been any real proof of that swap?

In any case, getting DCT to work with an E60 is very different than getting it to work with an E46.

Just out of curiosity, how much did the dealer charge for an engine?

There’s a video of the e60 m5 with dct. Youtuber Spencer filmed it for a bit. Pretty awesome for that e60

Hi.
I did many reasarch on google but if I type “m3 e46 6mt to smg swap” there are loads of results... about Smg to manual swap

I race Time Attack. All other M3 drivers do have SMG. Well, they are all behind me, except 1 driver which is very fast.

I know that SMG could have heat issues, but in case I do this job, I’ll apply the improvements I’ve acknowledged about across forums, like pump relocation. Plus, I’m an engineer, this should help finding solutions, if I haven’t forgot my studies.

I have read about DCT swap but If I remember correctly, It was extremely expensive. I’d buy an M2 at that point.
SMG is fine. I did think about SMG 3 but seems doesn’t worth the effort.

Forgot to answer about new engine:
Bmw dealer wants 9460€ plus the old engine back, otherwise they charge 1000€ more.
They deliver it from head (with spark plugs) to oil pan, I’ll upload pics later on today. You re-use your ancillary parts.
1 week to have it, in a big wood box they want back. With bill and 100000 km/24 month warranty.
I calculate it cost less than engine rebuild with Oem/cool parts.
Plus, after an engine rebuild, if a wrong torqued bolt fail, nobody admit “it’s my fault”, so...
This was 1 year ago.
I asked about a new manual gearbox and they said it was about 5500€.
The engine is new in all its parts, except the block, which dealer say it’s refurbished. Don’t know exactly what that means about the block.
But it runs damn good.
