Default Car is not starting

So, I tried to use my M3 today and it is not starting out of nowhere. There were no signs of it struggling to start before this. When I turn the key everything has power but the lights just flash on and off with a clicking sound.

Also I noticed that the convertible top light flashes for a while after I have removed the key.

The alternator and battery were replaced about 3 years ago and it's only driven on the weekend.

Could the battery need replaced again already?

I hooked up an OBD2 reader and there's no codes.

Wouldn't be surprising. Hook up a multimeter to the battery or go have it checked at an auto parts store.

Likely the battery. Or if the alternator was a remanufactured one it could be that as well. Multimeter will be able to diagnose either one fairly quickly. Most parts stores will check it for you as well.

I took it to autozone and they said it's the battery. After installing the batter they then told me that I need to do a battery reset. This makes the alternator talk to the battery so they don't damage each other.

Autozone said that they can't do it AFTER installing the battery. Is there some way for me to do this on my own? Is it really necessary? I called up a nearby BMW and they wanted to charge $150 just to do that. Seems absurd.

if it's e46 you dont need to program the battery change. they're wrong. just put the battery in and be on your way.

And even on newer cars, nothing prevents you from doing it after you install the battery. All the reset does is tell the car that the battery is new and to employee a slightly different charging profile.

Yeah, they said they could do it if it was a 2008 or newer but not on my e46. Good to know. The guy I talked to said a lot of other stuff about BMW's that was wrong.

Likely your starter!

I just had the same symptoms and replacing the starter fixed my problem.
