The car market is not what it used to be. One can argue that every single brand out there has lost its "nostalgic" feel and true grass route passion. I tend to think that real car enthusiasts are a dime a dozen these days. Back when air cooled Porsches were around, back when Lamborghini owned Lamborghini and BMW produced N/A masterpieces - these cars had to be earned, not just bought. You had to know how to drive a car with a heavy clutch and heavy steering and be passionate for what you were buying.

The car market today is all about sales. More and more I see 20 year old kids and foreign buyers driving Ludacris exotic cars with no true passion or understanding for what they bought. The more market a brand can capture by upping horsepower, getting rid of slow manual gearboxes with automated dual clutch systems, increasing aggressive styling and posting impressive 0-60 figures the better the car will sell.

I miss the days where owning a Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, Land Rover were actually a symbol of true enthusiasm and status. Now, exotic and luxury cars are a dime a dozen, any young internet celebrity can own a Lamborghini or Ferrari - its just what it is.

And with this, the price of our aging cars will continue to increase, as more and more people realize that newer exotic and luxury cars are dull and simply - not truly special.

I get more thumbs up NOW than I did way back in 2008 when I bought it.
I guess I was surprised. Nice to know our cars have such a great rep. despite the usual thing haters always bring up (you know, sub frame, VANOS..)

I have zero plans to ever sell my E46 M3.

Sorry. I true drivers car has always been regarded as one that is more mechanical, I feel. Electronics may make the car more responsive but it removes the ability needed to actually drive the car.
Lmao wtf

Even race car drivers donít drive manuals

I wouldnít consider a NASCAR or an Indy car a true drivers car. Iím talking about a touring/GT road legal car.

Enthusiasts will forever be unhappy with new cars, but in the grand scheme of things, enthusiast do not pay BMW bills. People who buy brand new cars do, and BMW makes what those people want. Their #1 goal is to make money for their shareholders and not to please a few whiny journalists.

Want old feel? Buy old car. Not happy with new BMW cars? Don't buy them. Easy.

Are they really doing even that job? Their global sales are up largely because of the Chinese (and to a lesser extent, Indian) markets. Their US sales are down. Their sales could very well be higher if they went after the segment they used to capture.

This is precisely what enthusiasts are bitching about! It's like the entire reason people pine for the E46 is lost on him. Yes modern cars are infinitely more capable than older ones, but most are snooze-fests to drive.

If you wanted a German luxury car that was fun to drive, you had to go BMW.

Now thereís no compelling reason to go BMW over anything else on the market. An f30 does not do anything (whether it be driving characteristics, technology, interior quality, or comfort) particularly well compared to the competition. Same the 5er. And the current 7 is universally panned as shittier than the S-class with no redeeming factors.
I think these two posts pretty well encapsulate my entire issue with modern BMW.

As someone whos last 9 car purchases have been BMWs, 2 of which were new, they don't make a single car I would buy over the competition these days-- or over BMW's older cars.

For BMW, people who *lease* brand new cars have been paying their bills.

It seems they're realizing that the vast majority of new BMW drivers are accountants who want to impress folks when they pull up, not people who actually want to enjoy a drive on mountain roads

NASCAR car or an indy car are the definition of true drivers cars. They're both absolute animals that require the highest level of skill.

I wouldn't consider any race car a driver's car.

The focus of a driver's car is the driving experience. The focus of a race car is to go as fast as possible.
