Default BMW upset with E46 M3 enthusiasts

BMW is upset with enthusiasts

Chief of development at BMW was quoted saying this at an interview recently:

“It has to beat everybody in the segment in driving dynamics because all the Australian, UK and American journalists say ‘ooh the E46 CSL was the last real 3 Series’,” Frohlich told motoring.com.au. “I do not want to hear that shit anymore.”

Well those enthusiasts are the ones who want a manual soooooo...

Sorry. I true drivers car has always been regarded as one that is more mechanical, I feel. Electronics may make the car more responsive but it removes the ability needed to actually drive the car.

They're making every car so damn cookie cutter.. no one cares.. As a salesman at BMW, they've lost their minds IMO... put it this way.. It's the end of 2018 and we JUST got in the 2018 M3 CS... 2019 3 series will be out in a few months.. and oh, yeah, it's $108,000.

Everyone needs to stop whining.

Enthusiasts need to realize they weren't going to come out with a new E30 in 2001, and more than they're going to build a new E46 in 2019. We can all just continue to enjoy our aging cars and how excellent they are, but stop pining for a new E46M with a warranty.

That guy needs to stop taking it personally. The only reason enthusiasts b!tch about their new cars not living up to the E46, is because they love them, which seems like a good thing for a brand. Also, we b!tch about the new cars not living up the old cars, because they're objectively not as good.

My carefully worded response to his rant is: "Bwahahahahhaha!"

Agree with most of this of this, although I'd say the new cars are objectively better than ever - they're faster, more efficient, more capable and would pretty much wipe the floor with a E46 in every measurable metric. But of course the new cars don't have the feel of the old cars (subjective), which is what we all love - and as you said we're never again going to get that feeling in a new car.

The guy's whole argument seems silly when he goes on to say this:

Quote:
First thing and this is for me the most important thing; you can drive fast and completely relaxed.
This is precisely what enthusiasts are bitching about! It's like the entire reason people pine for the E46 is lost on him. Yes modern cars are infinitely more capable than older ones, but most are snooze-fests to drive.

I don’t want a recreation of the e46. But their current cars have not been compelling. Back then the E46, E39, and E38 were hands down the superior drivers cars compared to their Mercedes and Audi competition. Perhaps a relatively small niche, but BMW owned it. If you wanted a German luxury car that was fun to drive, you had to go BMW.

Now there’s no compelling reason to go BMW over anything else on the market. An f30 does not do anything (whether it be driving characteristics, technology, interior quality, or comfort) particularly well compared to the competition. Same the 5er. And the current 7 is universally panned as shittier than the S-class with no redeeming factors.

The M-cars are still okay, particularly the M2/3/4, but if the manual transmission is gone next generation, I’m not sure I won’t hop over to the competition.

Exactly. They seem to be targeting folks who care about 0-60 times, not e46/ Cayman/ BRZ drivers that care more about engagement and experience than outright power.

If Porsche can bring back cars from the dead, so can BMW.
