So, <5500 rpm, <100 mph, < 75% throttle, varied RPM for 1200 miles, followed by a fluid swap.

100% agree

if i had a rebuilt S54 i'd be following the factory guidelines as well, but add in that initial oil change to clean up any debris.

Is that a recommendation on the BMW procedure? Or does the dealer just tell you that?

That is the BMW recommended procedure for new engines AND after a rod bearing replacement. IIRC they supplied a new sticker and we would write in the mileage when the 1200 miles was up.

I actually just checked as I have the SI B11.04.04 Service Action: Rod Bearing replacement here with me.

"Following completion of this Service Action, the following engine break-in instructions must be observed by customers: for the first 1,200 miles engine speed should not exceed 5,500 RPM or road speed should not exceed 105mph.

Engine oil service is NOT required after the completion of the engine break-in period."
