I used to be over there... You are an american with an american car, german laws need not apply you will register it under SOFA. It will be worth it, the local shops will be the best thing that ever happened to it, and when you come home anyone who points fun at your nurburgring decal will quickly be stunned.

Cheers,

Ping

When and where else will he ever get the chance to own a real CSL.

There's a guy that was moving to the States who was planning on selling his CSL. You can read up the thread, there are guys that imported true CSL's, there is a way to do it but it may be a big hassle. Maybe contact him, to see if he's interested in doing a swap of cars plus cash.

The videos and all the games can never reproduce the change in grade that you experience on that track. I wont ever forget how many of the turns are completely blind. Just driving one lap and you are exhausted.
He will have a great time over there and the M3 will help him start enjoying Europe sooner, than waiting to find a good car.

The stupid speed cameras are a PITA!

I am not sure what mods you have done to your car, but horse power should be last on your list when concerning the ring. Brakes, suspension and tires are what matter. My buddy wrecked his GT-R he had brought from Japan. That car was crazy fast, but the ring will expose any driver.

Make sure you hit up the 24hr race and try and get to the Ferrari weekend. I dont think ive ever seen soooo many ferrari's in my life.

I don't have any military experience, but if what others are saying about shipping the car being free (to you.. in other words, the govt foots the bill) is true then I'd do one of two things:

Ship your car and do what everyone else is saying, drive it on all the awesome roads and the Ring like few people will get to do with their own cars.

or

If you can afford a CSL, sell your car before you go and then buy a CSL when you get over there. Even if you can't afford/find a way to bring it back, 3 years in a CSL would be amazing and there will be plenty of American e46 M3s to buy when you get back.

But don't let your car sit in storage here in the states for 3 years. Be better to let someone else enjoy it and buy another later.

Just my .

Edit: And thanks for your service.
