I've always wondered if post weld heat treating would improve the stiffening function of the cage. Yeah, I'm sure there is added stress and twist when you introduce a lot of heat to a fixed tube welding on more tubes which sounds like what you may have experienced. While the cage does add stiffness I can imagine the structure not binding at all...wouldn't that affect handling? Just like a suspension, you don't want binding at rest.

I'll ask some people at work.

Post weld heat treatment just relieves the stresses in the welds to reduce the likelihood of cracking. I don't think it would help to stiffen the frame.

I believe PWHT actually weakens the weld and would not add stiffness. But it should relieve some of the stress (torsional???).

But it's kind of like a sway bar...you want the bar to be unbound with no stress when the car is at rest. If you weld in a cage and it had some stress in the tubes...I wonder if PWHT could improve the handling characteristics like going from an bound up sway bay to a properly setup bar.

I'm considering it...certainly won't hurt.

I can get it in the correct position with my own body weight. So there will be one cross member that will be in constant compression of 2000N, I can live with that.

I've done some research on cracking, HAZ, PWTH etc. and settled on using ER70S2 welding rods. The mixture or normalized 4130 and the E70 metal should give a good balance of strength and ductility right off the bat.

Wasted whole afternoon adjusting the rear halfcage. All aligned with a crossbar in place holding the proper shape.

Sunroof opening is useful for access to top of the down-tubes welds ! Maybe I won't have to cut the floor after all.

Really inspiring work; finished product is going to be great! Cant believe you're doing this in your driveway. What was your former job with the aircraft design?
