Default Re: Car won't start after oil change - SMG light on

Based on the video, if the lights are really flashing, it strongly appears to be low voltage.
***any battery or electrical work, especially at the battery or starter, can be life threatening, or cause a serious accident involving safety to you, and/or real, significant damage to your car. If you don't have the skill to do this, get someone who does. ***

If you have a voltmeter, tell us what the battery reads 1. after fully charged, in the well where it fits, but negative cable off the battery (no load) then, 2. with the cable on (within a minute or two of test 1), what does it read? I've not done this exact test but the voltage shouldn't drop more than a a tenth or two. 3. Test the voltage under the hood instead of at the battery. what does that read?

Next, if you have an ammeter that reads 10 amps, hopefully digital. You may need to a professional to do this, or someone who's checked amperage, as - WITH THE METER SET TO 10 amp range - you have to open the circuit and put the meter between the battery post and cable, so that the meter actually completes the circuit (not across the terminals like you do for voltage). If your meter isn't auto polarity and you hook it up backwards, you'll likely fry a cheap meter or blow a fuse. I would do this at the negative terminal. I don't know what the spec is on our cars, but after 15 minutes of being off, I'd expect you should see well under 0.5 amps. Even 0.5 is too high, that's like a couple of dome lights on. What does that read?
----------------------------------------------------------
I suspect the SMG isn't getting the right conditions to allow a start. since the pump primes but it won't go into gear, AND you appear to have low voltage - I think this is just a symptom of the low voltage. BMW controls just don't do well with low voltage. let's confirm we have good voltage or not. Hopefully if we fix that, the SMG brain works, and that will allow the DME to tell the starter to fire (you'll have voltage on the black wire from PeteyyPab's post).

Let us know.
