We tried replacing the sensor next. Didn't solve the problem, so at 115K, I got a new oil pump and everything's been fine since. Also fixed the OPN at the same time, so now I don't have to worry about that falling out in the future.
Well, let's revisit this oil pressure thing again because my oil pressure problem is back rearing its ugly head. As you can see above, I replaced the oil pump and switch last year and since then, the oil pressure light has flickered once in awhile, but nothing to overly concern me. Well, we had the first hot weather of the year in the northeast yesterday and the oil pressure light came on frequently when I was in stop and go traffic on the highway. When I got up to normal highway speeds, the light didn't come on -- it only came on when I was slowing to or at an idle.

Does this mean I'm due for some type of rebuild or should I try changing the oil weight to 20/50? I just had the oil changed about 1000 miles ago and the shop said they used either 10/30 or 10/40 (regular oil - my car has used non-synthetic oil it's whole life). When I used to live in TX, I used 20/50 in my e30 and never had any issues (didn't have my e36 back then).

Any thoughts? I'm moving back to TX in about 2.5 weeks and was going to drive this 97 M3 all the way there. Will it make it? I had no problems on a sunny 2 hour drive to NJ last weekend, but the temps outside were only around 65 degrees and I was not in any stop and go traffic.

I'm happy to report that this problem (which went away during the winter) was solved by installing a new Oil Temperature Sensor, which is located between the oil filter and the engine. It's a tight squeeze to access it but you shouldn't need to remove the oil filter (though removing the lid helps). You need a large socket. Bigger than a typical socket set or medium adjustable wrench will allow. The O2 sensor socket might work.

Bigneil - What is a "Oil Temperature Sensor?" Do you mean coolant temperature sensor?

My oil pressure light is flickering at hot idle too. I run 5w30.

I think an oil pressure switch might be the culprit, not sure what a temp sensor has to do with it.

BMW is saying we don't have an oil temperature sensor but I know I replaced this. Does anyone have the part number or correct name?

Thanks!

Nevermind I see we got merged and I had already posted the number last year!

Part #12-61-7-568-480

Just a warning. I 'thought' I had a faulty switch on my m52b28. Then I lost oil pressure @ 145mph. Not cool.
