yikes, did this some 7 yrs ago. and you don't have to break the mirror glass taking it off or tear the surface panel off the glass motor. if the arm is tight to the body you may be one of the ones where the housing is loose to the arm.

there are two types of mirror backings. one where it has a retaining ring that move side to side to lock into place(pic #3). the other has clips that press and lock onto the motor side(pic #4). there is also some double sided tape that adheres, so gently pull for those after un-cliping/un-locking. (4th photo shows my own tape added) For those that un-clip, when removing the glass, press the top or bottom of the glass in so you can access behind it. use a wooden spoon at either 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock position. not on the sides, that will crack it. for the type that's pic #3 the locking-ring one. to remove: press the top glass in so you'll be able to view the slot for the locking ring at the other bottom side at about 6 o'clock position. using a slotted screwdriver in the ring slot slide it right (maybe left) and it'll unlock. if the white backing tape is holding it still gently rock/work it with a wooden spoon until it comes off.
now after the glass is off you'll see the motor. remove these with torx screwdriver, i think it's three on the edges(not the middle one). then you'll see the shield(infront/behind) this is where you can see the other torx screws that hold the arm to the housing. if these are loose tighten them and the tear drop mirror housing will become firm again. here are a few photos of what to expect after the motor and shield inside.

Good info. I just pulled mine apart (driver's side). Came apart no problems! The locking ring, at least on the driver's side, rotates RIGHT. Also, a suggestion...use heat to soften up the double-sided adhesive. Either a heat gun, or I just put a halogen worklight in front of the mirror for half an hour before I pulled it apart. Good to go!

If I unscrew the torx bits completely, can I remove my mirror housing? I want to experiment with some things that will require me to drop off the housing at a shop for a few days

Adding my "Thank you" to this thread.

My mirror and the housing around the mirror were loose (drivers side). Bugged me and I could envision disaster as my mirror fell off on the freeway!

Thankfully I found this thread and in less than 10 minutes my mirror was secure again.

Great thread! Fixed both my "loose" mirror housings that jiggled over every bump.
