Thanks to this thread, I was able to fix my mirror. I used Loctite, so hopefully it won't work its way loose again.

Thanks for the help!

Great thread - I have a '02 and both sides are loose (the housings....) thought it was just mine - now I have the fix... Great forum full of great insight for those of us lurking in the background...

Thanks for the info and pictures.

I removed the mirror glass in mine (6/03 build date) for replacement. The mirror glass in mine is just as pictured above. The ETK lists the later style of clip in glass 51167157247.

Does anyone know the part number for the rotating retainer with the double stick tape as pictured?

Default Re: How to tighten E46 M3 side mirror?

I just did this on my driver side mirror. A couple of obervations for any one who attempts to do this. First when you pop off the plastic triangle, be careful because it is fragile and you can break one or both of the plastic push tabs. Simpley pop the top corner towards the steering wheel gently, once the top plastic push tab is out, you can look in to see what you are dealing with. Then gently pull the entire plastic piece as one up and out being careful not to break the second push tab. The two hex bolts you need to remove are 10mm. Make sure you have some type of towel or something to lay between the door and the mirror so you don't scratch either one. Take the black triangle mirror seal off to expose the two torx heads. The torx is a T-20. It is a little tight quarters so make sure you don't drop the T-20 into one of the openings in the door panel. Tighten with some lock tite or with lock washer as mentioned in this thread and viola, ready to go.

Great thread btw. This forum is very helpful to non-mechanical types like myself.

Glad I found this thread. Unfortunately, I think mine is suffering from both symptoms (housing and glass loose). I'll try tightening to see if that helps, but where is the best place to buy the glass and actuator if I need to replace them? Tischer? I did not know if there are any glass places out there like there are to repair our rearview mirrors.

I too have an 04 with the drivers side mirror problem.
I just walked out side in my garage and fixed it in 10min.
Thanks to this thread!!!
Used some red loctite and lets hope it never happens again.
