Default Re: My License Plate Lights Wont Fit OEM CSL BOOT!

Sorry to bump -

I have an OEM CSL bootlid as well, and I think my PO reused the standard plate lights. They are actually a bit loose in the trunk housing. They don't droop or bounce around, but there's some movement as if a tab is actually broken. Thinking about fixing this properly and while there, going with a subtle white LED.

Fern, can you confirm which of these PNs I would need, assuming I want both the housing and the bulbs? I see the 2 parts I need for sure (#1, #2), not sure about the other small things. Or in the alternative, can I just order the proper housing (2x #1) and then an LED from a vendor that is plug-n-play?

Sure thing, but I don't drive it during the week so I'll get to it ASAP! Thanks

*Damnit, drove over there and took pictures .... with the lights in place. Oops!

Default Re: My License Plate Lights Wont Fit OEM CSL BOOT!

Sorry to resurrect this thread.

But we are trying to put in e39 license plate lights,

63 26 7 165 646

, to oem csl bootlid.

We've reviewed as much materials we can get our hands on.

Seems like the step to install the e39 lights is to,

"Insert the plug side first and the slide with a screw driver towards the plug side while pushing up gently" as posted previously by daytonaviolet in this thread,

http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=361231

We are going to try to trim like was mentioned in that thread

But the funny thing is, we both also have e39, and the same e39 lights goes back in like the video shown here,

(about 0:50 secs into the playback)

Seems like the oem csl boot lid with oem e39 light which i see as what's meant to be used together, the steps to put the light back in to oem csl bootlid is not quite the same as with e39 trunk lid and the same e39 lights.

So, trimming is the only way to go?

Thanks.

Anyone still doing this mod, following step did help us, doing two separate installs of e39 license plate lights on two oem csl trunk lids.

First, we found some extra information here,

http://store.ijdmtoy.com/BMW-Error-F...uide-a/197.htm

, which basically reiterates the order of steps for putting the lights back in.

In our installs we had "stretched" (pulled out) the flat metal spring slight outward, and that did helped when pushing up while sliding toward the plug side with screw driver, to get that click sound.

Also, using a short stubby screwdriver didn't help at all.

just connect the wire, put the left side tab end in at an angle then tap it with a small hammer or screwdriver handle or whatever a few times from the metal clip side, and ill pop in then you just push in the metal clip side til it clicks in... very easy, no need to trim anything

i believe this to be incorrect. will it work yes, but it will also damage the edges of the bootlid license plate light opening. you should actually install it first on the spring side. compress it until the other side clears. this will have no damage to the non spring side.

no damage at all since the plastic on the light housing is softer... alot of people have trouble because the paint adds thickness to this area (as far as i know) trying to push it in is very difficult and could result in more costly damage
