Key refers to connector face type or layout.

Exclamation Re: P0420 Question and Introduction

Ok, I think the holidays killed some brain cells. Mattman, can you do me a favor and look at these pics. These are the two 02 sensor connections that are currently in the pre-cat position. I just wanted to get a second opinion. Plus since two are style Key=A how do I not mix them up?

Sorry tried to embed the image, but no dice.

Hi Charles,

Those actually look like post-cat sensors (at least the bottom one).
The 2 sensors that are way back on the valve cover towards the firewall are the pre-cats.

The tricky part is that the face or KEY for precat bank 2 is the same as post cat bank 1.

In your pic, it is clear that the BOTTOM sensor is the Post cat bank 2 face (look closely at the key shape compared to the diagram I posted). If you traced to wire to the top of the valve cover you will probably see that one connected to the O2/EGT wire loom and not the connector holders towards the back.

The top one may be correct.. but I would trace the wire route as well to make sure it's going to the right place (per the diagram posted).

P.S. I fixed the image so it's visible in your post..

Thanks for the additional info, I'll trace those back and see but since it's been apart and the wiring holder is off it may be tough to tell. If I unplug one will it throw a code identifying it?

Well I think I'm good to go, I disconnected one of each of what are currently my bank 1&2 pre cat O2's and the idled the car until I got an error for each. Got errors for bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1, they seems to match locations so I think I'm good to go

Just cleared all the codes and drove the car, all readiness areas passed. Of course it's an unseasonal 61F instead of what had been 10F with a high of 34F. Thanks to,everyone for the helpful feedback! I'm excited to be in the e46 community. I'll post a picture of the car as soon as I get a chance.

Old post I know but does anybody have the image posted by MattMan? It seems I have a very similar issue.
