Default Whining noise when off load

Long story short. I got an e46 m3 back in february. Life happened and only today was the very first day to take it out. I was quite impressed by the hp and tq difference ( I have an e46 325ci already). Couple of things I've noticed , engine is definitely noisier when iddling(is it normal?) . What really bothers me is the whining noise when I lift off gas. I don't think it's a wheel bearing(quite sure) as it doesn't happen when engine is under load. What I'm suspecting is previous owner might have used autozone differential fluid(sent him an message, waiting for his reply). Could that be the cause of the whining? Another think, when parking the car, if speed is low, even if the car is in first gear, looks like it won't keep the necessary rpm and will try to die on me (the oil lamp light starts flashing also when is doing that). All this happens when wheels are turned (left or right), but not on straight line.
Can anyone help?
Thank you!
Max

Yes, it's noisier than the average engine, but if you haven't done a valve adjustment, and don't have records, you should probably plan on it

AZ Diff fluid wouldn't matter unless it's the wrong type. Sounds like it could use a fluid change though. While you're under there, check to see if the previous owner installed poly bushings, because that would do it for sure.

Uuuuuh, I'd look into that ASAP? How's the oil level, for starters?

Overall, it sounds like you just need to assume the car has been neglected and do every maintenance item it's due for.

Drewster, thanks for the fast reply. I'll check diff fluid level to see if it doesn't need some.Exactly, plan is to assume PO haven't done any maintenance, so the To Do list includes :all fluids fresh, rod bearings, valves adjustment, vanos rebuild, subframe reinforcemnt (doesn't have any cracks, but just for my peace of mind) differential seals (I could see a lil bit of oil of passenger side, not a whole lot though)and while there I'm gonna replace all the bushing as well. The oil level is fine, the oil lamp stays off all the time, but it was on only when the rpm were too low to keep the engine running. If I give it just a tad of gas to stay at about 800,900rpm, no issues at all. I guess the ac and the power steering pump are robbing some power at low rpm. Might need some new spark plugs, injectors cleaned also.

Could be low transmission oil causing it to whine also .

Power steering pump? Whining is probably some sort of roller bearing. Id look at the belt pulleys.

If its coming from the rear and speed dependent then Id suspect the diff. But a diff whine is noticably louder and higher pitched as speed increases.

It's not thenpower steering high pitch, annoying whine. I'd suspect a wheel bearing, but I can hear it only when I lift off, no matter if I go straight or in 8's. I'd say it sounds like the bearing in the diff where the driveshaft joins the diff. I'll check the fluids and take it from there.

I took the car for one more drive till I have the time to deal with it. The whining disappears when I press the clutch or put it in neutral.

Then that would point to the trans/motor.

My transmission has whined off throttle since I bought the car, particularly in low gears

Could be in the tranny gears or the differential ring/pinion. don't think the engine.

In neutral or pressed clutch, there is no load on the gears so no noise as expected.

OP should be able to locate the noise at rear diff or tranny gear noise at front.

This noise can be subjective because all diff and tranny have normal noise. How can you tell this is not a normal gear noise when car coating with engine braking?
