I feel like people in slower parts of the country just can’t comprehend that everywhere is not identical to where they live

That is not as simple of an answer as you might think.

BMW has offered the i3 in 3 battery sizes:
60aH (2014-2016)
94aH (2017-2018)
120aH (2019-2021)

My car is a 2017, so it has the 94aH battery-- 50% more than the earlier cars, but only 3/4 of the current model.

From there, it seems like most people get ~5% battery degradation in the first 10,000 miles, than then it more or less holds steady for a long time-- Samsung (makes the battery) says that battery will fall below 70% of original capacity at 526,000 miles on average-- and which point (below 70% of capacity) the battery is considered failed. Mine is at 25,000 miles, so through the 5% initial degradation.

Temperature is also a factor-- very cold weather requires heat for the battery, heat for the cabin, and heat for the seat heaters-- the combined effect supposedly reduces the range by ~25%. Very hot weather requires AC to cool the cabin and the battery-- supposedly decreases total range by ~15%. Both of those can be partially mitigated by having the car precondition the battery/cabin-- which you can do by programming it to happen at a set time using iDrive, coding the key to allow you to do it remotely, or by using the BMW connective drive app. I currently have the car programmed to precondition itself, but my work commute time is identical every day.

Then there's different driving modes-- comfort, eco, eco pro+, that help to extend the range as desired. We've never used anything but comfort.

And then there's how you use the car-- highway is the least efficient drive cycle for the car, traffic jams are the most efficient. And faster on the highway is significantly worse than slower on the highway. Basically the less your speed is decreased by air or brakes and the more it's decreased by regen, the greater the range.

But, all that said, 180 is doable, off highway, if you gave any consideration to it and it wasn't the middle of winter in a cold area. E.g. here's a screen shot from my wife's last drive, just going to work (driving normally, AC on, full power, not hyper mileing):

6% battery usage got her 10.6 miles, so, extending that drive style out over 100%, 10.6/6*100 = 177 miles of range from 100% of battery for her that day.
(that does not agree with the car's estimated range remaining because that estimate is based on previous behavior-- aka, me driving it on the highway)
Sounds about what I would expect. So, I'd be somewhere between you and your wife. My commute is 40 miles of 2 lane highway where it's pretty much 55-60mph and lots of hills. I have 3 stop signs and 2 lights on that trip. Weather is mild here, so AC doesn't get used in summer, winter is not ridic cold plus we garage park and I like the cold so generally I don't use the heat much. Now how much power do the windshield wipers, headlights, and stereo use? I use those 3 items very often, stereo usually at a louder volume.

None of those 3 seem to meaningfully impact range.

I suspect you'd be fine for your drive with a MY 2017 or later (I'm assuming you meant 40 miles each way, 80 total).

55-60 mph is a very efficient highway speed for it-- you'd likely end up with ~130 miles of range (maybe more like 140 if you don't use the AC-- I never turn it off, in any of my cars). Hills don't really matter as you recoup the power on the downhill.

My guess is you'd get home with 30-40% charge each day with a 94aH battery car. 60aH would be difficult. 120aH would be overkill.

Congrats OP - on the baby and the i3!

Ive casually thought that an i3 makes a ton of sense for 90% of the driving I do on a daily basis, which is to/from work (only 5mi each way and unfortunately nowhere near the aforementioned speeds), grocery store, etc.

Dont know if I could actually pull the trigger due to space primarily, but Id also miss the ability to kick out the back end on the way to the grocery store etc ...

It can kick out the back end

Though you have to go through idrive for the option.

I've been wary that the 60aH was pushing it for range, especially during winter when I'd be using the most accessories. I didn't know they upped the size twice, only thought it was with the most recent update when they introduced the S.

conversely it's odd you think casually mentioning driving triple digits on your daily commute with no disclaimer wouldn't illicit a reaction from people outside your neck of the woods
