Default Should I buy? Estoril Blue E36 M3/4/5

Hey everyone,

I was hoping to get some advice and insight. Iíve been looking for an Estoril Blue E36 M3/4/5. I recently found one with 74k miles, dove interior and manual seats. Looks well kept and has been garaged. The seller is saying he wants $19k-$20k.

This seems a little high to me, especially looking at some examples elsewhere (like Bring a Trailer) that have gone for less. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Seems like the lower mileage ones have appreciated to that level. The owners who don’t drive their cars much suffer less depreciation in return for less driving enjoyment. It’s apparently the car you have been looking for. I doubt you will find one much cheaper with around the same mileage.

I would spend $19-20k on an 08-09 E90/92 M3 with around 100k miles if I was looking for a car on that price range to daily drive. I have an E36M3 and an E90M3 and like them both but if I had to choose one, it would be the newer car.

i would agree that $19-20k is about the going [asking] price for an Estoril M3/4/5 and the sellers know what they have. i found a couple - another one is in Miami area - and they were in that range for mileage below 80k. finding a good condition estoril 3/4/5, in that mileage range, is hard enough. it's even harder to find one that's somehow a bargain. if you really want an estoril 3/4/5 you're going to have to pay. in the end, i went with an e46 M3 and think it was a great choice and i saved a bundle over the 2 cars i mentioned at $20k. i did opt for higher miles, but the car is pristine and it was right in my town. the seller in philly was extremely nice and forthcoming - had some very good exchanges. in the end, we simply didn't meet at a price and i was having to compensate for the distance.

If its great, then yes.
If its not, no.
These cars are SO MUCH more than colour and milage when it comes to value.

^true, Estoril on Dove is not exactly rare. If the car is really great in every way, then yea paying 20k is just gonna be where you're at. Do you have some pictures of the car? And how much of the history is known and documented?

If well maintained and not needing a crap load of work then, yes, the price is not crazy.
Almost any E36 M3 is a $20K car. $11K price with $9k parts and repairs. Just depends on how you want to spend the $20k.

Hmm, at $20k, that's opens up lot of options. I would ask if you're dead set on an e36 M3. I bought my high mileage Z4M Roadster, although it is in need of some help at the moment. Food for thought

Is the car spec’d the way you want, or is it tempting just because you found an Estoril sedan with low miles? I would not buy it unless it exactly what you want, option-wise. If you really want an Estoril/black/wing and this is Estoril/dove/no wing, you will not be happy in the long run. I would also not be too swayed by the mileage. What kind of records does the owner have? How is the headliner, cooling system, and all of the other known areas. Are you prepared to pay top dollar and then have to fix a bunch of things?

As someone who settled on their e36 and has buyer remorse over the choice, I think you need to think bout what you are getting, or perhaps more importantly, not getting, for $20k.

I paid 14k for an estoril/dove sedan with no sunroof and 112k on the clock in October of 2017. I really wanted it and that was the price. I have spent a lot of time and money fixing, rehabbing and refreshing since the purchase. Mine was in fair condition, but I want it to be very fresh and enjoy the process. Did I overpay? Maybe, but I enjoy the car and knowing it is somewhat unique is nice.

If he has solid records of keeping things fresh and up to date and you like the car, I wouldn't hesitate to spend that on an e36. 15-20k for nice driver's is not unheard of these days.
