Just a privet track day for friends. Limited to 30 cars but we still have a few spots. PM if interested. Maybe Kalim can make it too.

Absolutely stunning. You have basically won at e36ing with this. I've always dreamed of an s54 swap. It has to be like yours though, as it just looks like its factory. Very inspiring build.

Nice, gives me hope of doing a CARB legal swap too.

Haha thanks!! I've been dreaming of and scheming for this swap for a few years now, and now that it's done and finished I'm over the moon with it.

I hope so too! If you don't do the DSC swap it's a whole lot simpler to wire it. CARB doesn't care about the DSC, but you will have to code out those functions from the DME.

I've read this journal a couple times already, brings back some memories! Awesome work!! And the BAR cert. is a very nice touch!

Also nice to see Kalim is on M3forum. I loved his sedan conversion journal

Cheers!

Thanks! Kalim's 'factory' S54 swap was the main inspiration for this build and for its ensuing scope creep. His help and expertise has been invaluable to get the swap to work.

Mini-update: I have been asked by folks who aren't interested in DSC for a simplified interconnect block diagram that still has the OBD stuff, as well as an even simpler version that is 'barebones.'

No DSC (note the question mark is for the cleaned speed signal to the DME, not 100% certain it is needed):

Barebones OBD2 compliance (note: I have not verified this, this is my best estimate):

If you're not using the Z3M cluster the swap is still possible, but I am not familiar with what is needed for OBD compliance nor if any additional wiring/hacks are needed. I know the Z3M cluster isn't needed for normal S54 swaps, nor is extra wiring.

M54 Z3 2.5/3.0i clusters would also work, granted your rev limiter wouldn't go as high (though if you can get some custom printed gauge faces, it should be easy enough to rescale the software). Another option would be to "simply" build your own module that handles the translation between the CAN-bus, I/K-bus, and analog inputs/outputs. The CAN-bus is well documented, and I think the only real I-bus command you would need to figure out is the A/C on command.

Good point! I know of some people who are building the CAN interpreter boxes to use E36 gauge clusters as well. There is a guy on R3V who claims his box gives a working AC command, but I'm not sure if that's for E30-style simple switch AC or if that would work with the OBD2 style digital HVAC/AC units.

I'm that guy and it is working in my 98 M3. I'll need to see of the E30 sends 12v or ground for A/C request but I can make it work either way.

I'll be building the first CAN interface for someone else next week. It will make the CEL functional as well.

Ahhhhh! I only remembered from skimming threads, I didn't put screen name to post content in my head.

I may need one of those if I end up swapping the sedan down the road. Nice job!

Any chance you can grab the brake pressure CAN tags? Would be very helpful for those of us with AiM data loggers, as the AiM CANbus interpreter can log all except brake pressure. I'm not sure if it's a set up or configuration issue, or if the data really just isn't there (but it was once upon a time for them to advertise it?).
