Even as a car enthusiast, you should be enjoying the other things that the city has to offer. Buy an unlimited Metrocard, and go around town for a few nights. You'll see crazy people on the subway, and if you ever get lost - read the map in every subway car and station. You'd have to be fairly uneducated to be unable to navigate through the NYC subway system.

Hit up an off Broadway play, enjoy the small pubs and crazy people you see around St Marks (8th St. Lower East Side), talk to strangers that are drunk, go to the Bronx and buy pizza, go to 53rd and 6th Ave. to get the Halal guys cart food, etc. Visit Times Square once, because once is enough to soak most of it in and understand why most native NYC'ers hate it. While you're there, avoid buying anything off the street, including people wanting to sell you music CD's (they can get very aggressive and they target tourists).

A trip to NYC is wasted if you're looking for automotive related things to do. Just have fun with a metrocard, and avoid driving in Manhattan if possible.

OP - nothing quite gives you the full NYC experience like renting a Range Rover Sport and driving over a couple of biker gang members. It's a blast. They will love to play with you after that! So cool - you just drive around and they follow you wherever you go.

Walk or taxi or subway.
