Just sold my e92 m3 (but kept my e46 m3).

Reasons why I sold my e92 m3 in 2018.

1. Gas mileage + small tank = annoyance. The V-8 is magical but you sacrifice any semblance of decent fuel economy. With Crappy gas mileage and its small tank it was a bi-weekly fill up car for me.

2. Weight. The engine unfortunately was coupled with a heavy car (3700 lbs in coupe form). Step out of the e92 and jump into a e46 and it’s night and day.

3. Rod bearing. Guys did you know this is a 3k job? Think about it when you consider that $20k e92 m3 with 80k plus miles.

4. Throttle actuator. You know there’s two of them that needs to be replaced? At $600 per part alone? Think about that after you thought of the rod bearings.

All aside the e9x m3 are great cars and for the price today you can’t find anything close to its performance/comfort package but definitely want peeps to know the full story before buying one of these v-8 animals.

I have two E9Xs right now and nothing I've driven on track (997.2 GT3, Cayman GT4 with every mod known to mankind, M4 GTS) makes me want to switch

Rod bearings on a job on +100k mile E46s as well, which by now is pretty much all E46s sold

The E9X is significantly more reliable than the E46M. If someone has moved out of an E9X looking for reliability they are in for a big surprise

Thanks, I've been considering an e92... I'm just going to stay with my e46 m3 right now. I'll stay with the cheaper e46 m3.

e9x reliability is significantly greater than the e46 in my experience. Yes, you can lock down a number of big ticket things (vanos, etc) with the e46, but all of the other little things that can go wrong usually do and its still expensive. e90 could be lighter/ have a little bump in power, but its still fun as hell, and great on track.

I'd get the E92 if I didn't just buy my E46.

Great cars for DIYers. Rod bearings are a day job and $500-1000 in parts depending on what you buy and throttle actuators are a 2 hour job and $359-600 each depending on what you buy. I would certainly consider maintenance and repair costs anytime I was buying a 5-10 year old car. The car price might be $20k but maintenance will be on a $60k car.
