Default Oil shoots out when dip stick is removed and blue smoke

Just purchased a Z3 with M3 E36 motor, the previous owner was not honest and did not allow me to test drive the car for more than 5 mins. Sold the car to me assuring the engine has no problems.

Right after I got the car, I noticed smoke from the exhaust, not knowing much about cars, I first suspected the head gasket, after some checks this was ruled out and now I believe it is burning oil.

Today after driving about 24 miles, i let it rest for some time and removed the dip stick, this is when oil rushed out. I do not think this is normal but was told by the previous owner that this is a high pressure engine and that I should let the engine rest long before taking the dip stick out.

a) is this normal? is it right that oil will rush out whent the dip stick is removed?
b) How can I tell if I am indeed burning oil, as I was also told that the smoke is probably burning of gas as the car might me running rich.

Please help - Thanks!

Blue smoke is oil burning.
White smoke is water/coolant burning.

Thanks much...since I am new to BMW engines.. is it TRUE that you should not remove the Dip stick when the engine is hot or else oil will shoot out - Thanks

To answer your question, no that is not normal. When your rings are worn combustion pressure enters the crankcase and pressurizes the oil pan. I've never heard of hot oil shooting out of the dipstick tube, though. Bluish smoke in the exhaust is indicative of oil getting past the rings and into the combustion chamber. Take it to a shop and have it inspected.

could also be a breather problem. all engines with have crankcase ventilation or a breather. if this becomes clogged it can also pressurize the crankcase causing oil to burn. don,t really know where the breathers are on these engines though.

and as yellow_m3 said it could also be warn piston rings allowing combustion gases to pass into the crankcase. a cylinder leakage test would be the best indication of this.

Never buy any BMW without a pre-purchase inspection with compression/leakdown test. No, nothing you posted is normal.

Always do a compression test before buying a used car.

Sounds to me like you have too much crank case pressure. In your case, this is most likely caused by a sealing issue with the piston and/or rings. Chances are at least one of them is broken. Do a compression test and report back. Be sure to pull the fuel pump fuse while doing the test.
