I finally emailed the company that hosted the video / claim they have the model like I said I would in the very OP hahah...

I became busy with my build so I basically forgot about this... but if the guys from the video don't pull through with a model and once my build is done I might put a little bit more effort into trying to compile something...

I did find some models shells for the E46 M3 somewhere but I never got around to converting them from Rhino and then checking any of their dimensions... I can't remember where they are now but this is something I won't bother looking into any further unless we can't get the model from the video and my build is done. (EDIT: I see I put links to them in my earlier posts in this thread haha)

I also found this video of a CSL model:

But similar to the video in the OP when you follow the links it is NLA on the site.

I sent an email off to them as well anyway to see if anything comes of it as it would be handy for people who have installed CSL body panels etc.

I got a response back from 3DExport who had the CSL model in the previous post:

Quote:
Hello,

Thank you for contacting our Support. My name is Andrew, it is my pleasure to assist you today.
We apologize for this inconvenience. Unfortunately, this model isn't able for purchasing. You can check this one, very similar model https://3dexport.com/3dmodel-bmw-m3-e46-21308.htm

Don't hesitate to post any questions here, if you need something else we will help you with pleasure.

Have a great day!

Kind Regards,
3DExport Support Team
It looks okayish but obviously the rims are wrong and some of the dimensions look a little off, can't put my finger on it, so not sure if I would want to sink $70USD into it... but it is an option...

Still waiting for an email back on the very original model I posted as that is probably our best bet I think... *fingers crossed*

I found this one yesterday, which is close but not spot on.

I'm also talking to a club racer on bimmerforums that laser scanned a car back in 08. He wants to sell it, as well, not sure how good it is. Pretty sure he's want me to sign some sort of "will not share" if I buy it...

I wonder how accurate those 3D scanning phone apps are these days. I'd think that once they start to get updated to support ARKit they should be fairly accurate (I don't believe any do, yet).

With the iPhone X's depth mapping system, some very accurate 3D models could be constructed-- though I don't know how far it works, and using it aiming the screen away from you would be a bit awkward.

Interesting...

I think I found that purple model in one of my early searches but there was some reason i didn't like it... can't remember now... it is a free file from grabcad or something is it not?

I think i saw a post from a guy on bimmerforums who was talking about 3D scanning so he could design some aero and do CFD on it but the thread never really reaches a conclusion and then it dies... so I wonder if it's the same guy... I know back then he was looking for donor's to chip in with him to get it done...

Do you know what he has scanned? was it just the exterior I imagine?

Depending on the quality / accuracy if he pegged it at a reasonable price then he would probably get a few of us that want to buy it...

Still hoping to hear back from the other website on the original model but we will see... this club racer could be a good resource if he has a good model and wants to offer it to the community at a reasonable price.

Having a shell and the engine would be a good start... most of the front steering and suspension should be easy to model ourselves except for the intricate parts like the knuckle, toe rods and subframe... but the shocks, springs, you could do a simplified version of the Front LCA, brake discs, brake calipers (if they are aftermarket monoblocks), etc should be reasonably easy... like I said when my car is on the road and I have time and finally invest in a new computer ill start trying to put some assemblies together on the side...

Not sure if SketchUp files can be exported to CAD/SolidWorks//AutoCAD/Autodesk Simulation/insert Computational Fluid Dynamics Software here...but I'd assume it can be?

If so, this looks like the best model I could find available (M3 CSL). You can manipulate it directly on the browser and it's downloadable for free.

https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/mod...ce5/BMW-M3-Csl
Looks like you can convert Sketchup to Solidworks (my preferred 3D software):

https://grabcad.com/tutorials/tutori...-to-solidworks

So that could be a good start... Obviously it is a CSL so its more use for guys who have installed CSL body panels but its free!

When I get back home... which is a long time from now... I will download some of these files we have free access to and do some overall dimension checks and if any of them turn out to be any good I will upload them to my Google Drive and link them here so if they ever get taken down from their respective sites we will still have access to them.

I also saw through that link you sent they have a S54 Motor model as well: https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/mod...-M3-e46-S54B32

Not as accurate as the one I have and linked for everybody but it could be good if we make an entire car model as it is a smaller size so will make the overall model more usable... especially for people who don't need 100% accurate engine dimensions...

Default Re: E46 M3 CAD Models

Actually the more I looked around that site you linked there are a few models that might have some potential / could be harvested...

Standard E46 M3:
https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/mod...MW-M3-E46-2006

Standard E46 M3 Interior:
https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/mod...3-E46-INTERIOR

These are all graphics models I think so they are normally just surfaces not "parts" per say... but I would need to download them to check... they are probably just one big "part" instead of individual elements... so if they turn out to be half decent in terms of dimensions I would probably work on breaking them down into individual elements (ie drivers seat, passengers seat, etc) and then reassembly them as a SolidWorks Assembly... makes it easy to work with as you can replace the individual parts or turn them on/off to access / see other parts...

In any case good work they are some promising looking models considering they are free... I will try and download and convert them when I get a chance and start doing some rough dimensions checks to see if it is worth my time splitting them into parts and building in to an assembly to host for everyone.

Schweet... I also found some more on that same site that I linked in the post above... but there are even more that I didn't link because even just visually they didn't look right before I even thought about the process of converting and then dimension checking them.
