I swear, reading some of these responses would make you think that this is the first generation of BMWs that have grown in size over their predecessors. E39 anyone?

Then the next point to bring up, with also taking into account inflation, has the new price of the 3/5 series stayed consistent? They've gone up in price if I'm not mistaken. This would mean you're not really saving much money by going from a older 5 to a newer 3.

But if you look at a new E39 (back in ~2000) and a new F30 today, that's where you see the big cost/efficiency savings/gains, while the two cars are about the same size. Sure, a family of 4 could have fit in the E46, but they'll have noticeably more room, more power, and use less gas (for about the same price including inflation) with an F30...

That said, an E46 was probably using 17" wheels, which would mean far cheaper tires than the 20"ers featured in this thread

Interesting bit that the 3 series has stayed relatively consistent over time after accounting for inflation. Depending on the options, a new one now is $35,000-60,000! That's quite the damn gap.
