Default Post- VANOS rebuild and rocker arms replacement

I've buttoned up my 123k mile MY2002 e46 m3 and it has a few problems:

1) start from cold: rpms hunt around 1k, not extreme though.
2) around town performance is not as strong as I remember.
3) obd codes repeating:
P0012 'A' camshaft position - Timing Over-retarded Bank 1
P0340 'A' camshaft position - Circuit Bank 1or single sensor.

4) See attached page from INPA for "vanos sensor" complaint.

5) Yesterday, the engine cut out in traffic, after a few minutes was able to
restart and drive it home (I was not in the car during the cut-out)

There is a utility that trains/reports vanos angles and pressures, I could use some help enabling it.

thanks,

Stuart

You need a new camshaft position sensor, based on the description shown.

If there are timing errors after you did work on it, you did not do the work properly. There's no DME function to disassemble the engine and time it properly, unfortunately.

Stu,
Just read this after I responded to your pm.

Intake cam sensor, while I heard it can be done without taking off the intake, it is still quite a pain even after taking the intake off, air rail has to come off, and it is tight in there.

Vanos 0012 error, could maybe be fixed by the cam sensor, if not, it needs to be retimed (Beisan has a procedure at the bottom of anti rattle procedure on how to retime).

I'll try to find some time to stop by and help out, but this upcoming week is tough because wife and I are moving. Will ping you.
