Default $250 Dealership cost to replace key? Contact Bimmer Tech in Irvine CA

The transponder in my key went bad so I contacted VISTA BMW for a replacement. They told me $250 for an exact replacement or $70 for a valet key. I opted for the valet key and drove my M3 for the next year or so with just this key. It's a weekend car anyway, so no big deal.

However, I recently saw a video on youtube by 50sKid and it showed a video about how your keys can be duplicated for about $100.

The guy that can do this is in Irvine CA and his shop is called Bimmer-Tech. This is not a paid ad or anything, but I can definitely vouch for this guy. He gave me options and was super speedy. Now I have a fully functioning key with all the remote features.

Hit em up if you need a key for your 1998 to 2010 Bimmer!

You can get new keys from thebmwminipartstore.com for around $130, and the valet keys for about $40.

I just purchased a new key from the BMW Dealer in Denver. When I called two weeks ago, told me it would be $170 per key. In the time between the call and going to purchase one, the price had jumped to $180.

They just gave the one page sheet on how to pair it. Paired it and its awesome to have keyless entry again!

Just want to echo this The price has risen a bit as I just purchased a new key and total cost with shipping to TN was $166.58. 157.15 for the key and 9.43 in shipping. This was for the main key only.

There's nothing wrong with my key except the center button is yellow and I only have one. It would be nice to have a spare.

One of my keys won't start the car now. It'll still lock/unlock and open the trunk, but the car just won't turn over. Is that a transponder? Does the key need to be recoded or something or do I just need to buy a new key? Anyone have this happen? Good info in this thread if I do need to buy a new one.

Feelin' dumb, but I can't find the actual key listed in their catalog? Also, do they do any precoding of features (or does that require having access to the vehicle?)

No problem, on their home page around the middle of the page there is a box labeled "Search By Part Number". Choose BMW and put in this part number: 66126955748

This will take you to the key. Add to Cart. You will need to email them a picture of the title and a pic of your drivers license.

Look at Can I order a new key for my vehicle? for the email address and requirements.

I just went through this. Evidently there are two independent circuits, one for unlocking/locking and one for starting the car. I actually took apart the Key Fob so that I could measure the voltage across the battery and visually inspect for something obvious. Voltage should measure around 3.2 if I remember correctly. After finding nothing wrong and several attempts to reprogram I ended up having to order another key.

IIRC the ecu can only pair with up to 10 keys. Is there any way to reset that?
