Default DIY Redux (Plasti Dip): Refinished my Radio Bracket and Sunglass Holder, Again

Hey all,

My first post on this last weekend got a fair amount of views and some of you were good enough to make suggestions on what might look better. My trim was bad and honestly I'm not even sure how someone even goes about beating up trim like that. It was like they took a screw driver and stabbed it to death. Anyways, the gist of the suggestions was that I should use Plasti Dip or buy new trim. I don't want to buy new trim right now as I have more pressing concerns (my seats). I just want better looking trim. However, it is a rainy chilly weekend so I thought lets spend the $5.50 and give Plasti Dip a whirl. I followed the exact same procedures

Materials:

1. Black Plasti Dip
2. 180 Grit Sanpaper (I used 4 sheets)
3. 400 Grit Sandpaper (I used 2 sheets)
4. 0000 Steel Wool
5. Degreaser (I just used Rubbing Alcohol)
6. Tack Cloth

Steps

1. Remove Radio, Sunglass Holder, and Ashtray compartment. I used this. I removed the door from the radio bracket. You don't need to remove the sunglass holder door
2. Sand using 180 grit. This is a PITA and took quite a while.
3. After a good base smooth base has been established follow with the 400.
4. Then follow with the Steel Wool
5. Then use the degreaser of your choice (I used rubbing alcohol).
6. Use the tack cloth, gently, to remove any debris.
7. I applied 4 medium coats waiting 30 minutes between each coat.
8. Wait 4 hours to dry, reinstall.

Bottom line IMO: Plasti Dip wins.

1. Plasti Dip feels like OEM
2. Plasti Dip fills in dents and sanding faults better.
3. Duplicolor feels more durable.
4. I think I should have used more coats of the Duplicolor. If I had went 5 or 6 coats it would have likely turned out smoother.

If your trim is rough and you don't feel like spending the money on brackets then absolutely do this. You won't be disappointed.
