Default Redshifts E46 M3T build and modification thread

Hello everyone. I mostly hang out at the E39 section on another board, but this seems to be the go-to place for E46 so here I am.

I'm no stranger to E46 - we bought one brand new in 2002 and it's still my wife's daily driver. It's a 330Cic in Orient Blue with tan interior and blue top. Only has about 63k miles on it.

I've also got a 2001 M5 in Lemans/Caramel with 63k and a (just completed) supercharged M5T in Sapphire/Tan/Black. I've also owned a 1995 Avus/Black M3 (2nd owner until someone almost killed me in it) and 1994 Euro M3 S50B32 track car (sold). And a couple of BMW motorcycles (also sold). You could say I'm a fanboy I guess...

I can link to photos or build threads if anyone is interested, but that's not the main point of this thread.

I was laid off from my crappy job last Sept which at the time was a giant bummer but turned out to be a good thing. Since then I've been trying to figure out what I want to do and as it turns out I'll be starting a franchise business which requires me to have a vehicle to drive around town to do my job, so after much soul searching I settled on buying an E46 touring and converting it to M3 spec. This thread will be the story of the build along with photos.

Today I made an offer on a 2003 325iT up in VT that has a suspected head gasket issue. The offer was accepted, and, for almost no cost, I'm now the owner of the car. I have to arrange transport but soon it will be here in NC and I can begin cleaning it up and tearing it down.

A friend out in TX who works/runs a junkyard is on the lookout for an M3 donor vehicle from which we'll take everything we need to complete the build, perhaps less a few items we will get from Morristown BMW (my go to for OE parts).

When that's done I will get the vehicle wrapped in the 3/4 wrap for my business and hit the road. A fun daily driver is important if I'm spending 20k miles/yr in it, right?

Here are a few photos of the car I've put the deposit on:

That's about it for now. Once I have the car here and am sure it will suffice I will begin getting parts.

Looking forward to sharing the journey with the board.

Cool! Maybe you can help us when we get started! I'm sure we'll like all the help we can get, as it's a new venture for the both of us. I helped with his supercharged S62 swap in his e39 wagon and I did a S62 swap in my e38, but we haven't deal with the S54 stuff yet, so it's a bit new for us. Brian and I will be working together on this one as well, but I imagine he'll be doing a lot himself as well since I can only come up to Raleigh from Charlotte on the weekends.

We're both really excited to get started on this build though!

Some updates:

1) The car is still in Vermont. Having trouble finding a trucker who is willing to go get it at this time of year. If no action soon I may borrow a truck and trailer and go on a road trip.

2) We've put together a large parts list, both from the donor M3 and also things I might need to check and/or replace. I'll begin ordering parts soon.

3) My buddy in Texas (Stuck from the forums) is having his crew pick all the parts on the list. Here are some photos of the donor, which is a 2005 M3 (build date 3/2005) with only 81k miles on it!

Nice pickup! I recently bought my Touring from Maine and had the same issues of getting it here to IL. Not a common route. After about a month of waiting and flaking bidders on UShip, I eventually went through a local company in Maine.

Company was Crafts Transport. Give them a call, they were very accommodating and family owned.
