Been a while since I've updated, but during Thanksgiving week I managed to get three track days in. My front rotors were done from the previous two days I did at Buttonwillow, so after changing them out, I wanted to see how the car performed.

I did two days at Laguna Seca, which was great because it was one of these rare 105 dB weekends that usually only get offered to major racing series. Someone must have canceled, so one of my local track organizations (SpeedSF) was able to grab it.

Was definitely worth it.

My E46 most definitely does not pass sound at a normal Laguna track day (90 dB). As it was, it barely passed even at this increased limit. At one point, I was blackflagged for blowing sound and the reading was 107 dB!

I resorted to short shifting for the rest of the day, and that gave me a 105.1 dB which they let slide, haha.

I brought a set of 265/645 Pirelli DH cast-off slicks that I had used for 4 heat cycles on my E92 at Buttonwillow (gave me a new personal record in my E92 of 1:54.6 at CW13), so they maybe had 8-10 heat cycles on them total. I also had a set of 275/35/18 Federal RS-RR that I use for commuting to and from the track.

First couple sessions I was running with the Federal tires and was extremely impressed by the car's handling and ability around the track. Very confidence inspiring, and I was able to set an amazing time - 1:41.871 on this tire. To compare this to the track times I've set in my other cars:

1:41.029 in stock M4 with Pirelli DH slicks (275/18)
1:42.55 in my similarly stripped and equipped E92 M3 with Bridgestone RE-71R

Fantastic result! I was excited to see what the car would do with the Pirellis. Unfortunately, I had pretty terrible understeer everywhere, and couldn't do any better than 1:44. The tires had definitely heat cycled out. Oh well. Next time!

On the second day at Laguna Seca, I was able to win 1st place in the Speed SF challenge with a lap of 1:42.1 on the Federal tires. Had I known there was a Federal tire contingency, I would have gotten two free tires. Oh well!

Very nice. I'm glad you got the E46. It's the best generation.
