Default Paint quality and rock chips??? Is BMW better????

I have a 2010 G37 and the paint quality is GARBAGE! After les than a year, the front bumper and hood looked like I took the car to Afganistan with all the rock chips. I had previously had 3 new Acura TLs and never had a rock chip problem like this. I live in the north east. I understand we have bad weather and the sand the roads when it snows, so rock chips are inevitable but this is crazy. My next car will either be an M3, or a 550XI with M sport. My question is, how has the pain quality been fow the BMW owners here??? I'm just dumbfounded over how bad my 10 month old car looks and can't wait to get rid of it!

I'm still just contemplating a move up from a 2003 325i to a new M3, so I can't speak directly to the M3's paint quality, but I believe that I can give some input on the quality of BMW's paint with respect to the Japanese manufacturers.

I owned a 1997 Integra GSR before inheriting my wife's 325 (she wanted an SUV). I drive about 10 miles each way, and at 70k miles the car looked like it had been used for a backstop at the 1,000 yard target range. Chips galore, and ANYWHERE that a rock could hit it-front bumper, doors, roof...

I currently own a 2003 Honda S2000 as my "fun" car. It has only 8,800 miles, but it also looks like it has been through a meteor shower.

The 2003 325i looks nearly new, aside from a few places where the bumper made contact with high curbs, etc. while parking. There are a couple spots on the doors where it has "parking lot cancer", but overall I'm VERY impressed with BMW's paint. Mine is the Silverstone Metallic, so other formulations may vary.

I'll also state that in the same number of hours in the sun the Integra was showing bad signs of oxidation. The BMW's paint looks nearly showroom-even at 120k miles.

That being said, I have experienced quite a few more annoying minor electrical issues with the BMW than with either Honda (Acura is really just a Honda rebadged for the US).

I have a 2004 M3 and the front end is marked up pretty bad. Even at 55k miles, it had numerous chips (front bumper being the worst). I think it mostly depends on how often and closely you drive on people's rear bumpers. Definitely doesn't look even close to being nearly new.

All car paint these days are inferior to the paints of old that contained lead. Paints don't hold up as well against rock chips since they have become more environmentally friendly. If you want chip protection, you need the 3M clear plastic protection or something like the Colgan vinyl bra. I use both...I have the clear plastic covering the front end, front fenders, and hood, and while on the freeway for long trips and on the track, I also use the Colgan bra. In 2.5 years now I have 2 big rock chips and both are on the windshield. Of course, even with the clear plastic protection, rocks will "chip"/bruise the plastic and leave a mark that looks like a rock chip. It does protect the paint though.

My Evo had hundreds, if not thousands of chips in the front, when I sold it after 26K miles. My M3 has just a few, after 36K miles, driven identically (including track days).

Infiniti has been known to have soft paint.

Bottom line is though, if you do alot of highway driving, it will get chips regardless.

When I got my car a year ago, my dad painted the bumper (due to chips) (we own a body shop)

Since then, i've put about 6k on the car. I literally have 1 chip. Car does not see the highway.

this highway is a killer if you commute there is nothing you can really do about except 3m clear bra but that too will look like crap after a few hits. Just repaint the bumper after it gets bad enough.

+1 to the above. If you don't want rock chips, your best bet is clear protective film. BMWs are chip magnets.

IMO all a clear bra is doing is protecting the paint for the next owner. Like putting plastic on your couch.

As others have said, you still see marks on the clear bra; it just doesn't hurt the paint. So you still have an eyesore on your hands that might even be worse than chipped paint.

Rock chips are a fact of life for any car that is really used and driven. Just have the bumper/hood repainted every few years. That will most likely cost less than having the car protected with a clear bra in the first place.
